I'm not an AR type guy. The 500 Auto Max is a rimless 500 S&W Magnum. I could like a 500 S&W in a lever rifle.

It's a rimless and slightly more powerful 500 S&W. Effective beyond 200 yards, but not by much. I agree on the lever gun thoughts in the Smith and the automax was done for rifle applications other then lever.
Bear, they make the lever option in the 500 S&W. Could fit your bill for deer. Light, nimble, and drop everything deer wise inside of 200 pretty much where it stands. I have a couple lowers laying around and had the thought about a truck gun pop in there. Maybe go DI with a folder and a dot. |

d4570.....Interesting link on the .50 Alaskan lever guns. I happen to like lever guns and have a few but none bigger than .30 cal. Bet I couldn't afford to have one built tho like in the link.

Shot a 50 Alaskan made on a Marlin 336 frame, by wild West Guns, Alaska. that was before they became TV stars and went around the bend.

BigHorn armory makes a nice lever gun.
500 S&W is a pistol round vs the 500 automax being designed for rifles. Pretty much the powder and the rim are the differences as the 500am is faster out of a rifle then the S&W. I would imagine loading the Smith cartridge to AM data would provide identical ballistics from a lever. |
