Still messing with the boat but had some time to look at the computer...
In the back of my mind is the thoughts of re powering my beloved 6mm rem.
It still works outstanding but "What if" I shoot out the barrel and need to get a new one, I am in love with a 6mm .
SO!
What If I go with ( I know I have brought this up a million times) a 6mm/06 AI.
I think a 26" barrel is a must but one in a sportier  taper and only 3 pounds not the 6 pounder I have now.
I have been looking some a 4 groove or 5r in 8 or 9 twist stainless steel maybe.
I looks like about $350 .
The faster twist would not work for my 55gr Nosler but the 80gr Barnes would be perfect.  The faster twist would in able me to go up to like a 107 ELD . I have seen some info claiming over 4000 fps with 100 gr plus, wow. I also found 6mm/06 head stamped brass for about the same price ,when I can find it, as my 6mm rem brass.
What if?
Thoughts?
AND yes I do know the barrel life is shortened a lot.

All good thoughts.  The 6-06 will give you about 200 fps over your 6mm Rem.

Since this is far off, might think about 240 Weatherby or the  .244 H&H Mag.

I know you love your 6mm, but have you considered the 25-06AI??

I would look hard at 6mm-284 over 6mm/06, they both have about same case capacity, the 6-284 will handle the long bullets better.

If it was mine, when you shoot out barrel, just have it set back 2" and rechambered to 6-284 or back to 6mm rem AI. By time you added a recrown, you'd still save about half, over rebarrel.

I would take claims of 4,000fps with 100gr bullets in 6mm/06AI with a grain of salt. 6mm-270weatherby comes closer 3,750fps, 100gr bullets and fries it's barrels, that's why 240WBY was developed, same case capacity as 6mm/06 and 3,400fps, even with 80gr 3,600fps is about it.

404 case necked down with a steep "improved" shoulder, chassis mounted bullpup style with a heavy #4 contour, 36" chromed match tube. Loaded with the heaviest of VLD's you still should get well above 4600 fps. I mean sure it's a bit of overkill at about a mile out, but at 1 and a half out it will put them down soundly! That's only if you wanna use the same action though. Bolt face would need swapped out then as well. Overall length would still keep it under four foot and weight would still be up around 8-9 pounds...barrel aint light.

BTW, Berger makes a nice 120 grain VLD game bullet. Not sure if you have tried any of them yet or not but I have always been a fan of the heavy and long bullets.

I'm a big fan of LONG bullets.
A big reason I use Barnes in most my rifles .Big smile

Well if that's the case! go the lines of Ultra LR bullets and stretch them bad boys out there! I'm sure with the bigger 404 you could seat a 200 grainer in a lathe turned job right in without issue! I doubt you would have any trouble breaking 4k fps even that heavy.

BTW, the 404 I keep referring to is basically a Ruger design. It's the 300RUM cut back to a standard length and belt removed. Remember the analogy of the atomic bomb tests in the 40's, deep tube, massive propellent, plug the end. They never did find the manhole cover they welded on to it.
