Finally finish up the old Krag 30 army, that jim and I bought at the MT gun show about 4years ago. Yea, slow moving. But it looks good, not elegant.
Took some time to find a scope that would work if mounted in front of the mil safety. but got a scount/long eyerelief on it now. This will be a deer rifle only, for thick woods hunting. I don't shoot thru vegatation so don't need a big bullet. It is 115 years old girl, so I'm loading it down, low pressure. Thinking of using Hornady 135gr FTX . Any thoughts or load info???

My grandfather Shot a Grizzly bear with his 30/40 no scope.
He was not a reloaded so it had to be factory shells. This was back in the 30's/40's. As he told the story him and a buddy where hunting deer and tripped across a big male gorging on chokecherries and did not hear or see them. How close he never said, but he decided to shoot it. His partner had a 30/30 , he was his back up... Anyway what ever the rifle held is what he shot. Unloaded on the bear, he never said they had to run so I assume the bear was killed in the chokecherry patch.

The 30-40 only gives up about 200 fps to the 308/M14 loads.
The original 30-40 loads, mil, were 220 grains and did 200 fps; a serious load for most big game. The US only needed to cut the barrel back to 22", and load pointed 150 grain bullet and could have saved millions $$$ on the '03. and had a better gun. If you have not cycled a Krag, you can't believe how slick the bolt acton is. It has a well known reputation as the smoothest bolt action rifle ever made...true.
