Do we really need a roto-moulded cooler for our hunting trips for say a week ? Two weeks ? Some are sized in liters, some in quarts . Liters are bigger right ? Asked this one another site one guy came up with ice is cheaper than the high $$$ coolers . How big a cooler ya'll think is good for one Antelope ,or one big deer ,cut and wrapped . The wife and I are looking at 75 quart, for the trailer for traveling ,and myself for hunting . Yeti is out , wont even look at one . Son likes Pelican, way up there ,all my old coolers were always Igloo . Time for a new one . What do ya'll say ? |

I have had and used a lot of coolers over the years. I have a couple of the roto-molded coolers. I bought them when they were on big sales. Are they worth it?? I don't know. Do they keep ice and food cooler longer? Absolutely yes, however, they are much heavier and cost a lot more. It all comes down to insulation. I can and have taken normal coolers and packed them with ice and food and wrapped the cooler in a couple of heavy blankets and kept it out of the sun and was easily able to keep ice for a week. If you really want to keep ice for the longest time put it in a smaller cooler and then put that smaller cooler in a bigger cooler and keep it out of the sun. I would not be surprised if you could keep ice 10 days or more this way.
If I had to do it over again I don't think I would spend the money on a high end cooler. I would rather have several different sized regular coolers and just mange the coolers according to what I need to do. |

To help I've spray painted all my low end Coleman coolers with white paint. Still caan't get them to hold rock frozen meat fot 5 days unless all Ice every other day. dried ice every 3 days.
Thinking of making inserts out of styro-foam (1") for all 6 sides Yeti type coolers are tooooo heavy for me to lift (cool food bad back). thoughts??? |

I often take frozen game meat down to folks, two to three day trip. I use one of the 120-180qt "boating" coolers and place 56-65qt cooler inside. I have both brands of "extreme" boat cooler (reported as five or seven day). I pack inner cooler, with frozen meat and void around it with ice, frozen jugs and cubes.
You could do similar, using blue or pink foam board, cut to size, I just find it's easier to use two coolers. For extended trips, where ice isn't available, I take extra coolers, packed with frozen jugs, swapping out, with cooler holding food/drinks. It's easier to hold ice, than food on ice. In my camper, I added 1.1 cuft (32qt)freezer and inverter. For less than a yeti cooler, I can run it off inverter and trucks alternator while traveling. A separate deep cycle battery, would allow overnight use, without running down truck battery. They make about the same sized 12vdc compressor frig/freezers, for ~$300 to $600, that would work easier. These aren't the junk thermoelectric cooler/warmers, just small 12vdc frigs. Engle and Dometic are the higher dollar ones or off brand like this one, for half as much. https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B07B8J3LS1 |

Here is a completely different angle on this issue. Instead of a cooler buy a real small freezer. Small chest type one are 100-150 bucks. If you are traveling in a vehicle (truck) you can put the freezer in the back with all the meat in it. Plug it in for a day before you leave. The freezer is pretty well insulated so you would not have any issue going a couple of days. If you stop at night and stay in a motel most of them will let you plug the freezer in as long as you have an long enough extension cord. If you are in camp then most camps have a generator so you can plug the freezer for a couple hours. A couple hours a day will be enough to keep the contents for as long as you need to. Worst case you get your own generator. A 3000 watt gen will run a small freezer with power to spare and you have the gen for other uses besides having an extra freezer at home in case you need it.
IMO this is a better use of $ than spending a lot of money on a high end cooler. |

We have an off brand Yeti type that's as big as a truck bed tool box.
Any thing over 5 days we take a small freezer and generator.

I like the idea of a small freezer and an inverter or generator.
I don't know about anywhere else, but around here dry ice is expensive. Wing master

For at least 40yrs, folks always took along 15cuft chest freezer. We would fill it with gallon jugs of ice. We would take some along, each day, to cool lunch and cooling down game. Freezer worked just right, for cutting and wrapping, where possible, we'd let skinned game hang overnight (at least), laying the game in freezer, if daytime was too hot. We'd hang and skin day's game, before supper and cut up previous days game, after supper. Even with five of us hunting, freezer would normally hold boned out game.
Folks would take freezer along on moose and elk hunts, two moose filled it pretty full, two elk and two deer also filled it. Even when they had horses and packed it, they would take freezer, to bring back the frozen meat. Those type of trips, were the only time, they didn't cut their own up. They kept a 5cuft freezer in 5th wheel or motorhome when traveling, they would put extra fish they caught and eat out of freezer on the road. They made a couple trips around the states and Alaska trip. They found four hours, of generator, twice a day, would keep food frozen, when they didn't have shore power. Both 5th and MH, had inverters that would, run freezer while driving, so when they moved daily, they didn't need to run generator. |
