I have been watching youtube videos on how to do it. It really doesnt look that hard to do.
I have been thinking about building a skinning pole like D has for deer. I might do that and try skinning the next one I shoot. What kind of knife works best for skinning coyotes? Wing master

Yes we "Case " skin them. I don't skin deer with my skinning pole it goes in to the reserve on the truck and it's just for coyote, fox, and raccoons .

This is some of what we are getting with the cash.
Not a big unit but very portable and we can run it off our generator we already have . In the event we have a structural problem in the on sight water testing period... The other portion will be to insolate and finish the Boys shed so we can "finish " the hides and get another $25 each.

I've used skinning pole for deer and such for 25yrs or so. First a homemade one and few years ago "upgraded" to store bought one. It really saves your back, when you're old and fat. Some what similar to this one. It really came in handy when there was no trees around and while kids were at home, couple dozen a year to skin, saved my back. Loading is somewhat easier with couple planks and sliding deer into truck, but hoist does hold one end, so you only have to lift half.

Being German, I tend to be thrifty, so say cheap. If you have a rear 2" receiver this works great.
The bed extended is pieces of two inch box beam. Can extend rearward OR used to extend upward. the knee piece fits into the receiver and sticks up about 4+ foot. I put a pulley on the top where the beam is pre-drilled (Lowes) added a cheap small boat winch, with a hook that fits the Gambrel. Total cost under $95...time about 1 hour. It removes in seconds so you can just carry it in your truck bed until needed. Good to about 600 pounds. Skin 'em where you shoot 'em!

I spent about $20 on my first home built one, the store bought was about $75, the one I linked is more current version, with dogleg and swivel lock, to keep deer from spinning. The pivot, to load in truck bed is handy, but couple planks also work. I've found over last ten years or so, I can't just grab big MD and throw it in truck, anymore.

On mine I used a small block(4system) & Tackle, Harbor freight $7, in lieu of crank winch. And mounting it in the receiver lets me use it to swing deer into bed or on to carrier when I'm by myself. In my good olde days i could lift a 200# deer into truck bed; today i can't slide/lift a 120# doe up 14" onto my deer carrier. Buy my 'gin pole' helps.

I always thought "Gin pole" was an oil field term. Wing master

As a teen working on old cars, we had them on pick-ups to get engines into bed. Commerical fishing boats also call them gin poles to pull large fish or crab/lobster traps on-board.
Don't know where the term came from? maybe oil fields?

Thanks JSG. That's a lot different than "Gin poles" in the oil field.
In the oil field they are two poles attached to the back of a winch truck and the winch line runs through a block that is used to lift heavy parts when they are putting a drilling rig together. Edited by Wing master - 22 January 2018 at 23:18 |

Someone makes a gin ple that attaches to a pick-up by putting it in one of the PU bed "stake truck" holes along the bedd side.
Couldn't find one on-line. but similiar too this.
