I think Ruger has addressed that problem in more recent times but certainly any of the older used models could still have that problem. Seems it was a bbl problem from what I can remember. But anyway Wingmaster said Bolt gun so won't affect his choice I'd guess. |

Wish I could talk him from scoping his truck rifle.
Much better to use iron sights - They are going to get bumped around!?

Wow, That's a good price for any rifle.
I haven't seen one in person, but at that price it might be worth ordering one. Wing master

Kinda wish, I would've ordered that rem, instead of just posting link, they're sold out now @ that price. I don't really have need for it, but still hate passing up deal like that.

I agree Robert. That's what I'm thinking about that Thompson Center Compass. Around here they are around $300.00 but they also have a mail in rebate. I have read several reviews on line and they seem to be pretty accurate.
I will check Sportsmans Warehouse and see if they have one in stock I could look at. This one is really getting my interest. Wing master

Locaal gun shop has Compass for $179.98 so I went over and tried one out. decent...but the only ones they had were in 308, '06, 270. if they had a 243 it would have walked with me.
trigger is a littilt heavy but is adjustable.

I ordered Savage axis youth in 223, $140 after $50 rebate, I'll set it up for grandson's use and may end up as extra one for kids use. I'll load it down to 22 hornet levels, before stepping it up. I had set up heavy barreled savage 223, for his use, but this will be more his size. I keep hearing how accurate axis are, I guess I'll see.

Keep me posted on the Axis Robert. If I haven't got something before then I will be really interested to find out how it does.
The local Sportsmans Warehouse doesn't have a TC Compass in stock to look at. I really don't want to order one without seeing one first. Their is one more gun shop about 10 miles outside town that I will check this weekend. I am still scratchin' my head. I will decide on something pretty soon. Wing master

Axis may be ok however, my grandson bought one few months ago....could never get the scope to work right.....turns out the scope base mounting holes drill/tapped into the top of receiver were not true to the bbl. Sent back to SAVAGE and they replaced the entire rifle. No word from him yet how/if the rifle mounts a scope accurately.

IBD,
Let me know how that turns out. I understand a bad rifle here and there but if it looks like a pattern I might scratch that from the list. Wing master

Today I went to Walmart to see if they had a Savage Axis in .223. They didn't have any on the rack, but the girl behind the counter said according to her computer they had 3 in the back room. I looked over a .308 they had on the rack. The stock is pretty flimsey and I couldn't dry fire it to see how the trigger was because it didn't have the bolt in it. but I have read that the trigger is pretty heavy, but doesnt have a lot of creep. A lot of reviews said they cut a coil off of the trigger spring and ended up with an acceptable trigger. As far as the stock goes, You get what you pay for.
I had been reading reviews on them earlier and everything I had read was good. A lot of the reviews were really good. Like several people saying they shot half minute groups consistantly. The price was $269.00. And Savage is offering a $50.00 rebate. The girl wasn't in her element so I said I would come back tomorrow. She had no clue how to get one out of the back room. I think I will go back in the morning and get one. The price is pretty good and I guess if I can't get decent accuracy from it I am not out all that much. But I bet I will be able to get something acceptable out of it. At least Truck gun accuracy. I will post a range report when I get it, get a scope on it and get to the range. Thanks for all the input guys. I really appreciate it. Wing master

Wing....there are 2 versions of the Savage AXIS rifles. First run had a standard trigger, might be what you heard about.....second version, AXIS II XP has the ACCU-Trigger, adjustable by user and very nice to use.
Stock may be same on both models, no idea about that. Also, why they are pricing them to move if they be the first run with standard trigger. A little bit of research might be in order on your part. A Wal-Mart gun counter person most likely won't have a clue. Be sure to check the links out for info from SAVAGE & be sure to watch the video for the each model for design info & accu-trigger info. I'ld go with a 6- 6.5 class gun for the truck. Fast and flat enough for any varmint and big enough for any of the rest if need arises. Easy enough to find a used Savage 110 or a Ruger 77 in the .243. A good ring set like the SSK, TSOB and a Nikon prostaff, all in for under 5 bills and will take a beating and still shoot well.

The youth axis, I ordered, is the pre-accutrigger, which can be better, after work than acctrigger. This series covers it pretty good, be sure to watch first one also. https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=3&v=_NLKp3Djf3U

It's not the .223 Wing stated he was looking for but another truck gun option would be the MINI-30 in 7.62x39. Ya, I know it's just a Mini-14 with a bigger bore.

After a day of elk hunting, I stopped in at Walmart and picked up the AXIS. It came with bases and I had an old set of Weaver rings so I put them on. I put the bolt in it and it is pretty smooth. The trigger is really bad.
It is the pre accutrigger model. The model with the accutrigger is about $100 more expensive. I figured for a hundred bucks I can get a Timney so that didn't take too long to decide. I am betting like the above video I can make it acceptable. After walking up and down hills all day I didn't feel much like doing any more tonight. I'll put a scope on it tomorrow. I have one that's not on a rifle right now. I am hoping to get it out and shoot it tomorrow. If I do I will post the results. Edited to add: I didn't see any elk. Wing master
