Today I had a little extra time so I thought I would
drive out to my gunsmiths shop too see how my Swede project was coming along. I had no expectation that it would be finished, because I dropped it off about 6 weeks ago on Cinco de meyo. (May 5th). The first thing I noticed when I walked in the door was my rifle sitting on his rack untouched. The gunsmith wasn't there but I asked his machinest if he had any idea what time frame I was looking at for getting it back. He wouldn't give me any kind of answer at all. he wrote my name and number down and said "I'll have Chuck call you" How long should it take for a rebarrel and a bedding job? The last time I had this done I sent it off in the mail and had it back in about 4 weeks. Not that I was expecting it to be done that fast, but I wouldn't mind getting it back pretty soon. rebarrel and a bedding job, actually takes one day
(not counting blue job). But you need to get into the backlog. Gunsmiths are traditionally independent and unreliable, that is why few make good money or last long in busness. Also they are not organized nor scheduled. I've waited over 20 months for a rebarrel job!!! Calling and visiting keeps his feet to the fire and will get your stuff soon. Also they all take friends and friends of friends work first. |

Did he/you already have the barrel, most places are at least, 8-12 weeks out on 6.5 barrels.

He wouldn't commit to a finish date. Maybe that should
be a red flag. He didn't have a barrel. He had to order it. He is going to use a Krieger barrel. I didn't realize the wait time on a barrel. Bear, Your comment about them being unorganized might very well be the case here. It looks like a bomb went off in his office and his shop looks about the same. He does come highly recomended by a lot of people in this area. Wing master |

I hope mine doesn't take quite that long. I did tell him I
wanted to have it in plenty of time to work up a load for it and use it this hunting season. DD What are you having done to the stock? Wing master |

I believe it's called micro cell abrasion? The removal of wood by sanding one cell at a time. At this rate I should have it back just before our sun burns out? DD |

LOL.
Wing, I think I'd start "bugging" calls, about once a month. Say something like "I'm going to be up your way next wednesday, I thought if it was done, I'd pick it up". If you don't get it by December, have your wife make a call every 3 weeks, guys can't take a female voice 'nagging' them very long! |

I am thinking I will go to his shop early in the morning
to check on it a few weeks from now and if he doesn't give me a finish date I will stay there until he either gets tired of me and runs me off or gives me a date. I will make sure I have all day to spend with him. Wing master |

I went on the Krieger website and built a 6.5 barrel. They said it would
be a 4 month lead time. I would not have plans for using it this antelope season. I could be wrong? But that doesn't happen very often. DD |

I know lots of people that get mad after a year or more,
and just take their gun back. CB did that once, even though he thought the 'smith did good work. |

I am kinda imbarrassed to say, but I allready paid for
it. I should know better after paying for a paint job on a car many years ago. The body shop guy kept pushing it back so he could finish jobs that hadn't been paid for. I'll not get too worked up until he has the barrel. Then, I will expect it done pretty damm fast. 4 months, That would be about september 5th. I guess I had better get my .308 back out and plan on using it. That's not that big of a deal, but I really was hoping to have it done in time to hunt with it this season. Wing master |

Just out of curiosity I went to the Krieger website. They have a build
your barrel feature. It asks for contour, twist, caliber, length, etc. I just entered what I thought Wing was getting and it spit out 4 month lead time. I have a Krieger barrel on my most accurate gun. They make an excellent product. You just have to wait for it. DD |
