My boy and I went out for a last chance bear hunt

Cold, wind, hail, and snow but the grass was very green .
Covered a lot of ground.

This time we where seeing a lot of bear sign anyway .

The higher we went the more snow and drizzle mixed with hail, nice...

I did not get any pictures up on top at 7000 feet not much to see, just snow on the ground, snow in the air, and snow in our faces.

We did run across an old mining community now apparently mostly owned by the forest department.
Lot of old mines and excavation holes .

Good thing I had a "Logger" with me , needed his services .

It did not take long for the road block to be removed.

I know , I know , how can anyone having this much fun call it a "Curse" right?

Well Some place along all the "LOOKING" we managed to lose two sets of gloves, a hat, and a $800 gps...
We did how ever find a huntable bear, we saw two others but on private land.
We ranged the bear at 289 yards, I had my 4570, a doable shot but thought we could close the gap some more.
Wind was in our face and timber between us and the bear. About the time we made it to the edge of the timber and what should have been a good 100 yard shot, the "Curse" the wind switched 180* yup bear got our wind and was in the next mountain range when we stepped clear of the brush...
It was a very nice bear too, not Yellow but shinny BLACK.
Dang it .

tough one. But any day hunting with your son, is a
good day.

I use a lanyard around my neck for my Garmin, with the
unit in my breast pocket. a little late now, like
locking the door after the cow has gone!

Years ago, I was hunting with a terrific looking young
lady from NYC. arrived at the end of the day at my
vehicle to find my 9mm S&W was missing ugh. Left her
in vehicle and back tracked the whole day's trail at a
fast pace. I found the pistol right where I crossed a
fence. Worthwhile using 4 hours back tracking...even
if cost me a romantic evening...Smith and wesson are
good friends too.

We looked for hours but most of the walking was not in the snow finding it would have been a million and one shot

I use a bino harness on my gps. Couple years ago, hunting partner lost his rangefinder, he hooked carbineer to belt loop, belt loop tore off, spent hours looking for it. We found it by chance couple days later, in the low sage, in middle of two track. At least few dozen trucks had been down that hill and none had run it over.

Nice pics again....expensive day for one of
you....chainsaws sure can be handy to have
along....always have one in my woods truck.
Another good tool to have is a picaroon..always carry
one of those too..if anyone don't know what that is you
don't need one.

Sure I know what a picaroon is. Webster says it is :" a
pirate, a rogue, vagabond, thief, or brigand." It just
surprises me that you would ride with a such a foul
person in your truck.

To move logs, I prefer a peavey.

the picaroon give much needed leverage to move pretty
fair sized logs or drag those to big to wrestle but
small nuff to tug into position.....say you mention
foul person in my truck but I'll have you know I more
than once allowed a "Philadelphia" Lawyer ride with
me! What could be worse than that????
