Have never shot one or paid much attention to these. Supposedly the
only US made semiauto that can handle shorts, longs, and long rifles?
A buddy of mine has a line on one and asked me if I was interested. I
had a 572 pump I wish I had back but that's as close to that model that
I have gotten. Just wondering if anyone has any first hand experience
with these?

the speedmaster like the 572 handles S, L, and LR
interchangeably. And it works great with single shot
shooting with LR.

Nice squirrel rifle, keeps them dancing.

My 572 made the 2 annual MYGAWDS.

The 572 is called a Fieldmaster-pump

The 510 is called a Targetmaster- bolt action

I'm curious about the 552 Speedmaster-semiauto

DD;

I was lent one as a teen, and I forget the program, but
it was held in the old National Guard horse armory. I
was probably 13 or 14 at the time, pre high school at any
rate. But it was a formal shooting class/event type
situation, and I know I passed with flying colors. I do
remember that I liked the gun, had no problems with it,
and wanted one for my very own. I never did get one for
myself though. Dad borrowed it from his best friend at
the time, who only lived two doors up the street. I was
told I was too young to have my own .22 rifle, but I
suspect that it was too expensive.

However, it wasn't any too long after that that I signed
a statement that I was old enough to legally buy a gun (a
bald faced lie) and sent off the order to the
Finneysports catalog people. Much very serious thought
went into the day to send the order in, even though the
odds were 5 to 1 in my favor as to the arrival date.
'Cause if it came on a Saturday I was a dead man. The
Marlin 57 Levermatic came on a weekday so I got to it
first, and kept it hidden for about 3 or four years!

That gun's long gone and no real regrets either. I
should-a saved for another few months & bought a Marlin
39, but I didn't. The point being though, that I do
remember that the Remington SpeedMaster was even more
expensive than the Marlin Mountie that I truly did
desire.

I have a 550-1. If I am not mistaken it's similar to the
552, maybe even a predasessor.
It will cycle with short, long and long rifle ammo
because it has a "floating" chamber. It works good, but
if you shoot a lot of long rifles through it it gets
buildup between the floating chamber and the receiver.
It's not hard to clean out but won't cycle shorts until
it is cleaned.

I like the gun. It's reliable and pretty accurate
considering the not so good sights.

If you do get it, let me know before you take it apart.
If it is the same as the 550-1 it has a screw that holds
the sear spring. It's not necessary to take it out for
general cleaning and is a real PITA to get back
together. (don't ask how I know this)

How much was a lot? ~ $75?

Are those case deflectors really necessary? The 550-1 looks like it's
hard to use the charging handle. That's why they moved it to the other
side on the 552?

Back in those days....semi-autos were God. So they
charged a lot even though they were very inexpensive to
build, lots of stamped and pressed parts.

In 1961 the list prices were:

Rem 552 = $55
Rem 513T mil issue target model =$88
Rem 572 FieldMaster (bought me one) = $57
Rem Nylon 66 (brown/black green) auto $54 (plastic
action molded integral with stock).
Marlin 39 Mountie = $78
Marlin 89 Auto = $39
Winchester   model 52 Target = $140
Winchester 55 single shot auto = $20
Winchester m70 std = $139

Back then profit margins were high, so I use to get 10%
off list from LGS.

Bought one back in 60 something. Can't remember for
sure. Still shooting it with no problems. A little hard
to clean and might gum up if shot a lot. Only shoot LR
in mine so cant say about shorts. Only 22 rifle I still
own. May say something!

Fella's;

If I remember correctly (and that's a pretty big IF) I
paid in the thirty-something dollar range for the Marlin
57 Levermatic, and that included shipping.

The Mountie may have listed for $78.00, but I seem to
recall that in the Finneysports catalog it was less than
that. Maybe $70.00. A straight model 39? Perhaps
middle sixties.

I think .22's ran less than a penny a round.

In 1960, I bought a box of federal 22 lrr for $.80.

bought just one box a week, to shoot in comp on tuesday
night at a school basement range with 15 WW-2 vets. great
guys, all gone many years. They treated me as 'the
kid'...I learned a lot from those 15 friends.
