Fella's;
This is a variation on a theme explored countless times on other sites, but I thought I'd narrow it a bit & put it on here. What three big game rifles would you use for anything anywhere? Big game guns, not trying to cover all bases, so rimfires need not apply & neither do things like the .17 Remington. Have you already got 'em? If not, what would you like to get? My, I've got 'em three are: 6.5 Swede, .30-06, and .338 Winchester magnum. If I were to modify that it'd be 6.5 Swede, .338WM, and .50 BMG. Just in case the odd T-Rex shows up in the back 40 you understand. 900F |

45/70 First choice
300 win mag ,which I don't have is second. Then the almighty 30/06. Anything in the lower 48 would be covered !!! PS you CAN'T shoot bison with a 30 caliber... |

I can make that simple.
If I was limited to North America it would be one gun a 338WM. I can take anything from yotes to bears with one gun one load (250 grain Nosler partition). If it was world wide then add a 375H&H and I am fixed for anything. If we went one step further and said one gun world wide then it probably be the 338 but with some different loads for the real heavy game. Russ |

I am thinking .257 Roberts, 6.5 Swede, (maybe a little
overlap) and the 30-06. I didn't include a magnum on my list, but I wouldn't feel under gunned with any of these. Wing master |

If only allowed one, it would be the 338 win mag.
If only allowed two, then the 260 Rem and the 9.3x62. If only allowed 3, I'd get the 260, 338, 9.3x62. If allowed 4 then I'd add a 44 mag carbine or 30-30.. |

270WBY, 338WM, and 416 Rigby. Some overlap, but pretty much covers it. If varmints/predators were included, 270WBY could be traded for 22-250 or 6XC.
I don't have Rigby, don't foresee trip to Africa, if I went to Australia, I would want one for water buffalo. 270WBY would be my choice for smaller game, although 7mag would also be acceptable choice. |

Simple. 5.56x45, 7.62x51, 375 H&H. Ammo can be found for all three anywhere on the planet.

Good choices Maple. Your the first one to pick a 7mm
anything; although RobertMT gave it 7 mag an honorable mention. I'd have thought the 7-08 or 7x57 might have made it. My late affair with the 260 rem pushed the 257 of my short list. |

Ah, the 5.56 X 45, otherwise known as the .223. Not a big game cartridge in my estimation. Yeah, yeah, I know plenty of deer have been taken with one, but poachers have also taken plenty of deer with a .22 rimfire, doesn't mean either one of 'em is a true big game cartridge. To me, it's a choice, but not a good one. 900F |

I side with you on this one 100%. However, PA considers turkeys big game. (Why I have no idea). For small plains game up to speed goats....passable. 7.62x51/.308 win., with proper loads can take just about anything in north America shy of the big bears and buffs very well. .375 H&H, Killing everything with great authority for 125 years and still going! Recoil is noticeable though not unbearable. Will thump the biggest of deer well out past 400 yards and has more then adequate power to rip through the toughest of shoulder bones including elephant to 100 yards. |

Now had you gone 3-gun SHTF?
AR-10, any decent pump 12 gauge, and any NATO chambered handgun that functions well and you feel confident with. Choice of the AR-10 is for double duty, both hunting and protection. Much better option then the 556x45 |

So my misunderstanding of this is the "anything anywhere ". My take on it was using a big game gun on things that may well be suited to a rimfire or shotgun up to and including Jurassic Park stuff? To me antelope, whitetail, most hogs, etc. are medium or plains game not "big" game. Semantics got the better of me. DD |

If we could have only picked one, I would have picked the
"magical" .270. Since we could pick 3 and I didn't want to make 900f feel bad, I picked the 30-06 with my other choices. Wing master |

Well, there's "magic" and then there's delusions. These are fungible terms you know. It was a "magic" moment at the time - - - - - - - - - - - then you found out you caught a dose from that moment. Still "magic"? Enter the .270, stage left. 900F |
