It started out wonderful!
The boys arrived from the airport and CB transported them to there hotel. The temps where above "0" slightly and NO wind.
We planed a night hunt so CB900 got them fed and I picked them up and as the sun was setting we where in the field. I'm new the Night hunting thing as was bachekermooni, bear has done it all... We made the first set as the massive full moon cleared the snow covered horizon. It was so bright you did not need the kill light.
bachekermooni Has that picture .

We made three good set with out as much as an answer .
I did see a person on a snowmobile running around doing his own style of night hunting and we saw his tracks very near where we where trying to call My guess is he had the entire area disturbed.
Home around 9 pm, now Bear has been up since 12 Am the day before but I hear they made a dinner run after I dropped them off

In the morning I was able to talk the coyote whisperer to come along, my son.
We all get to the king ranch at 6:45 am now 5 strong two trucks and headed out. The wind report dictated we head north to find ground that was calm enough to call.

CALLING was perfect!
Just no coyotes .
Set after set Nothing, more trudging throw and drifts. It was a little tuff on the travelers as well as CB and 45, the coyote whisperer never gets tired .

My boy was called away midway through and we all piled in to CBs extended cab, not an easy feat.
Called some more and worked our way in to a small town that had a bar/restaurant and casino.
Had some well needed lunch, burgers all round.

A few more set and we was whipped !!.

Saturday

The plan was to hunt the king ranch no mater the wind.
I gathered up the guys and we headed out to meet at CBs at 7;00 Am.
That is where things went a little side ways...

After a big doe mule deer decided to crash our party...

A few hours along side the Highway this is how I ended the hunt.

Bear and bachekermooni where dropped off at there motel after a ride back 4 deep in a single seat tow truck.

bachekermooni has that picture too.

My story ends there.
CB900 and his boy picked them up from there and I guess the story continues from there???

A lot of bad luck for sure.  On a positive note---look at all of the great guys you were with.  Hi Bear, CB, and Cyrus. (and of course to you and your son)
Maybe you have used all of your bad luck and better things will come later this week.
AS always D, thanks for the great narrative and photos.

Thanks.
But as you know living in Montana .
It's not if you will hit a deer .
It's WHEN will you hit a deer...

I'm all about the adventure.
I never know where or how it will turn out.
It's like a plain landing no mater what if you all walk away it's a good landing.
We ALL walked away unscaved.

D,
It's like the 6.5 Guys motto,  LIFE'S AN ADVENTURE--STAY ON TARGET.

Several years back I hit a nice whitetail buck in Lolo on my way deer hunting.

The new shoulder season paid off yesterday so you know what I'm doing today---cutting meat.  There is still time for another hunt elk hunting for you.

It was -22 when I was driving through Drummond, MT yesterday morning at 6:15 a.m.   Brrr.  It was cold but I wouldn't have an elk if I had stayed home.  I know you can relate to that.

Wow...tuff luck there with the deer and truck coming
together. Good nobody in truck hurt.

I can relate to deer and trucks coming together. Last
spring coming back from MT and other points west at 7
miles from house I hit a doe whitetail with truck,
raining and around midnight... me not hurt...$500
deductible later and truck ok.

Then on 2nd run to MT a few weeks later my truck collided
with another deer in MT an hour or so in from the ND
border at about 11pm. No one hurt in truck again.
Fortunately truck was able to continue trip. Repeat on
the deductible thing after getting back home and truck
fixed again.
Now it is PARKED!for the winter anyway.

Tuff on the hunting too for the 'yotes. But like Lizard
says the adventure and companionship makes it worthwhile!

It wouldn't be an adventure without adversity and drama.

From the Sept. 7, 1911, Great Falls Tribune comes the following bounty
report: "The (bounty) certificates showed a total of 124 coyotes killed in
the vicinity of Cascade and accompanying the certificates were
delivered the 124 coyote heads… After being inspected by the clerk
and recorder these heads were destroyed by burning in the furnace of
the courthouse."

Each coyote head was worth $3.

A lot of money back in 1911. Nearly enough to finance a present day
coyote hunting trip?

Fella's;

Saturday was indeed a blah day for us. Nobody up here
had a train wreck, but bah, and humbug. Due to the
activities of the day before, I didn't even unpack my
truck Friday night at the ranch. The cel phone was in
the truck & I didn't find out why everybody was late
until I'd had a gallon of coffee & woke up enough to
wonder what was goin' on. Then I noticed about a dozen
missed calls from the same number (Cyrus), called back &
got the story about the blatant murder of some poor girl
hitch hiking on the road to Belt Montana.

I'm told the highway patrol came and investigated for
well over an hour. Got all names, addresses, driver's
license numbers, even the passengers, and then spent time
trying to find and notify relatives of the deceased.
Took pictures, and then forced all members of the Coyote
Expedition to cram into the cab of the tow truck to
return to Great Falls. Understand that this was in & of
itself a violation of the law. Four in the front, and
only, seat of the truck and nowhere near enough seat
belts. No wonder I drink!

In any case, I went into town (40 miles) picked up BEAR &
Cyrus & returned to the ranch. Coyotes were called, but
in vain. An attempt was made to go back into an area to
the south that we knew coyotes were in, but that flopped
about eight feet off the road. The snow were a bit
deeper than anticipated, so the body floated & the tires
lost traction. Nobody felt like walking in a half mile
through the stuff either. We ate and I returned the pair
to Great Falls.

On the way into Great Falls, the subject of the local
world famous mermaid bar came up. I drove past the place
to show interested parties where it was. I have not yet
been able to contact said parties today, Sunday.

More to follow.

Anyone else notice the lack of details about said
collision?..... I mean I have heard how tough these
Montana mule deer are. Did one of them get ticked off by
you fellas keeping them up with all the ruckus and just
walk up to the burb and body slam it a few times out of
spite? Or did one of the yotes sneak back around and
bludgeon the burb with a muley whilst you were set in
wait for them?.....gotta be a better side to the tail.
...oh yeah! thats gonna hurt!

Big grin from Maine. Wish I were there. It's the fish that
get away that keep you coming back.

0 degeees and minus. I can just imagine setting my bottom
on the ground with the wind coming into my face.SO.... how
did all the discussion on keeping fog off the goggles pan
out? Keep the fingers warm?

Goggles worked great no fog.

Maybe you should have told them someone was injured. You
just didn't have to tell them it was the deer.

I had a great time. Great hosts, great friends.

Enjoyed Mrs CB's dinner and Got hit by the Dam Fog. Abd the steelers won. CB and I hustled a new guy for BSB, hopefully.

I had all the right clothing and was always comfortable.

The trip was so much fun...I'm still on it! Was supose to get to Denver at 4pm, just got here now. My home flight was almost home but I'm still in Denver. Allegedly equipment failure so the DoubleTree cost is on me.

Might get out tomorrow????? Got a wake up call for 5 am.

Hunting wasn't exhausting to this old man...but the travel is killing me.
