My aluminum boats I give two acid wipe downs. Usually use
the cheapest vinegar I can get cheap by the gallon. My canoe is 26 years old and the paint is still on. |

The $$$ thing sure slows down the progress. Then there is the issue about no pull unit yet either. Thanks samchap, I have been doing a lot of research . D |

Hang in there! It will eventually all come together.
"(SNIP) I am currently having an aluminum boat built by a company that specializes in workboats here in Southeast Louisiana. Over the course of the last few months I have seen the boats that have come in for repair. They repair Tritons at least once a week. I've also been to Gravios a few times over the years and will have this boat painted by the Gravois paint guy."....... "(SNIP) Based on what I've seen, I can offer the following comments: Aluminum boats, if painted, need to be pre-rigged - that is all the holes drilled -- ALL THE HOLES before paint. Stainless screws and bolts through the aluminum need to be coated with Tef-Gel. The Coast Guard boats Gravois is building use 75 small tubes of Tef-Gel per boat. You need more weight in anodes than you might think. Boatzincs.com has formulas........" http://www.thehulltruth.com/boating-forum/155385- aluminum-boats-electrolysis.html My experience with aluminum comes from working with 30- 40 year old and brand new aluminum irrigation pipe 65 mil. The piping was used in a solar heater utilizing warm pond water. The older pipe had been laying in the woods for all that time, was darkened from exposure to the elements and some was strongly dented/bent. After several years of experimentation and numerous configuration iterations we arrived at a usable prototype. The prototype was constructed with brand new 30' aluminum 65 mil. After the first summer season in a pond the new pipe exhibited serious pitting. Some at least 50% through the pipe. In contrast, after several years of using the older pipe there was no noticeable pitting. I went into the GRANGER catalog under industrial epoxy coatings and from that section contacted The RUSTOLEUM tech support for a coating recommendation. Short answer, The aluminum used now days often comes from overseas manufactures and contains impurities that promote/enhance pitting and that aluminum requires an acid wipe down, not excessively, a coating of a water base 2 part epoxy primer and a coating of water based over coat epoxy to reduce pitting issues. Rollers work well for this. I used 2 over coats and used the heat- exchanger for several years after the coating with no pitting that I noticed. An evening spent on the internet looking for information on aluminum boat corrosion should give you some coating avenues , and go-no-go aluminum usage tips. |

I flipped the Waterbug hull bottom side up to work on the hulls. I added some more bridging and cross support. Then I took some 20 gauge cold roll and bent it to shape and added a small trim tab to the bottom and back of the hulls. The cold roll is to help stop sharp ice/rocks and it slides better then Aluminum. The lip is to "Brake" the water like a drip edge on your roof. I'll add three ,four inch by 1/2 inch hdpe plastic to each cat to make it slide even better . I'll paint the aluminum with a rubberized paint before permanently attaching the sheet. Then I plan to coat the cold roll with "Gaiter Glide" before the plastic to make it slid as easy as I can. One day I'll put a motor on this thing...D |

I think you need to pickle the Al before applying
anything. It adds rough/pock surface. I did my aluminum canoe with some acid etch and paint is on 30 years now. |

I found some UHDW ( slippery white nylon plastic ) for the boat here in town at Windsor plywood. 4X8 sheet 1/2" thick perfect, $305 a sheet. That sounds nuts but it is a good price and no freight . I have found some on the net for around the same price but there is $300 freight , more if it is a residential address and a per cut price.
They will cut it for me and sell me a half sheet for $160 , cut it in to 6, 4" wide 8 foot strips for the bottom of the cats. But I need to put the sheet metal on first, the plastic will hold on the steel. I found a peace of 20 gauge 4X10 galvanized at steel etcetera here ,and they will cut it into 2, 2x10 pieces, for $78, I'm also getting some more Aluminum and make another brace between the cats half way up. I'm wondering if I spray , "Under coating" like we used to put on cars and trucks, on the Aluminum cats first then cover it with the sheet and plastic, will it help stop the Aluminum to steel electrolysis ? I'm mixing the heck out of the steel/aluminum stuff. It will be the most contact area , I don't plan on ever running in salt water as in ocean but alkali is salt too. d |
