Fella's;
FACT: Having a major kidney stone lodged in there is also more painful than giving birth. Four I.V. ampules of morphine in four hours says so. The only thing the dope did was prevent me from having to scream, didn't seem to really lessen the pain all that much. I have watched several human live births & can't say it looks to be "fun", but as the above alludes, it must be satisfying in some way. Can't figure out how that is, but the facts speak for themselves. 900F |

Yeah, kidney stones. ER admitting nurse says, "On a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the worst pain you've ever felt, how would you describe this?"
My answer: "FOURTEEN!!!!!!!!!!!" |

I have had several Kidney stones, three had to be taken out with surgery. I have deveoped a great imitation of the Tarzan Yell because of them buggers. Had one hit right in the middle of an Elk hunt. Made it to the nearest Hospital, DR. gave me some pain pills and I promised I wouldnt touch a gun as long as I had Taken a Pill. Pain went away after the first day and I passed the stone on the second day, Had a good hunt. |

Some day over libations and a few dead yotes, I'll have
to tell you guys the story about a pair of rusty sixteen pennies, a muddy ladder and 27 stitches in the testicles story. I surely have never uttered, "I wanna do that again"!!! |

Savage, first gen accu-trigger. Shoots well, though I think switching to something a bit nicer may be in order.....and perhaps a bit cheaper to shoot.........700 nitro is cheaper right?
Not a fan of the trigger. |

Ruger 10-22 or CZ 452 FS seem to be popular.

10 Gauge with about 8 shot. Not only effective on the squirrels but saves having to prune the trees as well.

I use air rifle, for squirrels, cheaper, quieter, than 22rf, probably not approved in all areas, but if gophers are taking to the trees, all bets are off. We're starting to get few grey squirrels around here, must've came in with the tourists or something. Pine squirrels and gophers aren't worth eating, but grey's are different story. The people feeding them, at their bird feeders, approve even less, than when you pop the pigeons and Obama birds.

Ditto the air rifle for all those reasons. Deadly accurate at fairly close range and surprisingly lethal. Took out a problem wood chuck at about 25 yards with mine (RWS 22 @ 980 FPS), and that's a pretty fair size critter.

JSG & Cascade;
For gophers you'll want a .22lr rimfire. Light enough to walk with and accurate to 100 yards & beyond if at all possible. A 10/22 usually takes some work to be able to achieve that. Sometimes the cost of the work easily exceeds the cost of the base gun. Frequently, when all the work is done, you can then reassemble the base gun & it works just fine. It just won't be as accurate as the "worked on" 10/22 that you've now got about a grand into. Another choice is the S&W A/R clone. I've noticed that the people who use it are always smiling, except when they're writing the check for more ammo. The gun doesn't cost a grand, but the weekend ammo bill can! The CZ 452's are well represented at these events, particularly the left handed versions it seems. Once you find the ammo they like, the gophers are gonna die. Haven't seen too many Savages at the events over the years & there might be a reason for that. With the cost of ammo these days, you need that positive reinforcement ya know. Also, good glass on the gun is a good idea. Eyestrain should be saved for bleary leering and ogling of the fair sex over drinks and dinner, not produced by a day's torture looking through a BSA scope. 900F |

For a while there, 223 was easier to find and almost cheaper than 22LR. Seems to be better now.
