JSG;

Uh, for mulies, which tend to run larger than whitetails,
my .30-06 load uses a 150 grain bullet. There's no need
to go any heavier. The old saw about "bucking brush" is
mythical in my opinion. Modern construction bullets can
do just fine. Picking the shot & placing it properly is
far more important than any "brush bucking" supposed
ability.

You can push a 150 to 3000 fps in an ought-6,
particularly in a strong action like the Weatherby, but
there's no need to. Anything in the high 28's & 2900's
will do just fine. I don't think you need to consider
400 yard shots any too much in Penn's Woods.

I agree that 150's and 165's are about prime. He had them for bear as it was in an overlapping season in this WMU. Guess he figured better to be bigger then not enough if the scenario changed direction.
...oh yeah! thats gonna hurt!

D, the problem is not just bullet weight in the '06.

Most PA woods hunters like factory 180 gr '06. these
are designed for elk and moose and just don't expand
in even the biggest whitetail. So they are like
sticking a deer with a 30 caliber sword...no
expansion, no shock value.

I've tried with hundreds of PA deer hunters,
explaining that the 150 gr would be many times better.
But they are like CB says...wed to big deer need big
bullets that are 'brush busters'. Heavy jacketed
bullets just don't belong in the hands of the average
deer hunter.

Congratulations to your son JSG.

It doesn't matter what I am hunting, if I see a coyote
it turns into a coyote hunt.

I shoot 150 gr SST or Interlock in my 308 around 2830
fps. It is accurate and spares my shoulder - especially
in a Kimber 84. Never seen a need for anything faster
or larger out to 500 yards on medium game. YMMV.

D;

A good thing to do is perhaps let the rest of us know your
schedule. After all, you are the man with the expertise &
the boom-box.

seems I lost a message, but a repeat.

bach seems to be getting in at about 1pm
I'm due in at 2:15 pm

If he waits we could get a cab to Econo Lodge formerly
Ponderosa. Not classy but clean and close walking
distance to restaurants. Could you join us? My treat.

I know CB is in the little belts, a distance off.

Bach is that ok with you???

Fella's;

I had thought to greet the two of you at the airport &
provide the ride into town. But since I'm specifically
excluded, I'll just stay home and drink.

Bachekermooni & Bear
Kinda looking like winter all over the state.
That's NOT a good thing. -20* here this morning. By Saturday it may be as high as +25*. We got 8" of new fluffy white crap this storm the wind could become a nasty factor in our Plans. At this point in my mind If we get a Chinook It will make it warmer but worse.
Maybe another storm coming in on Sunday, Not expecting as much snow as the last but wind may come with it and THAT is BAD news. We will get out and call but it WILL be a very hard hunt, just the way it looks right now. I'm defiantly planning on full whites and my full winter under stuff. AND I dug out my snow shoes , YUK, even in 5" of snow they help a LOT.
Lets cross our fingers and hope for the best and plan for the worst .

Fella's;

We've got 9 days now till you two come in. In 9 days the
weather will change. Of course now that we want it to,
it'll be perverse about it. What's the opposite of a
Native American rain dance? Armenian Bar Mitzvah?
Something ethnic from Chad or Mali?

OTOH, I have secured written permission from one neighbor
for this project & I'm pretty sure I'll get it from
another also.
