Last night my Lee Hand-Prime broke. I don't really think that I've loaded that much ammo w/it...but I don't have an exact count.
I need some .38 Special ammo, badly, so today, I went to Sportsman's Warehouse and got a Lyman E-zee Prime hand primer. I looked at a RCBS handpriming tool 1st, but for some reason, I didn't like it. At the moment, I found something about it that I didn't like, so I switched to the Lyman. Right now, I have no idea what that reason was...it was pretty much the same price. Tonight, I went to prime some cases. On the 1st case, the primer went in upside down...about 3 cases later, sideways. I primed 8 cases total, and on none of them were the primers fulled seated. I am using a Hornady #6 shellholder (The Sportsman's website says that it accepts standard shell-holders...and also has a bad review for the same problem). I don't like the fact, that w/the lid on, the primers can turn over. I have a mind to take it back and exchange it for a Hornady ($5 more). Any ideas? John 14:6 |

Why not take it back & exchange it for another Lee? My Lee handprime is the only item from that company I have, but I've had it a long time because it works well. At the modest cost, I should go get a spare just in case mine breaks. And I imagine you just might be able to get two of 'em for the cost of one of the Lyman, or RCBS, or whatever. 900F |

The new Lee has same problem feeding primers, it feeds primers in two steps, instead of right out of tray.
I've used RCBS, while helping friend set up his equip, it works better than new Lee. I've heard newer ones also have problems, they make couple of models, I don't know which is better. I bought RCBS bench priming tool, but SIL ended up with it, works very well and certainly worth difference in price. I use Lee auto prime on press (Original one), for those I don't load on progressive. You can still find them sometimes on evilbay. |

I have both the old and the new Lee. The old works very well and I have not had any issues with it. I bought a new one and it works ok but I usually get one or two primer that flip over with the lid on and that is very annoying also the new one does not seam to flip the primers over when you are shaking it as easy as the old one.

Fella's;
I'm wondering why Lee might have increased the distance between the primer tray & the lid. Right off hand I can't think of a good one, but from the comments it's fairly obvious that they did. The first solution that I can think of would be to get some .010" sheet clear plastic & rim glue it on the inside of the lid. You would not be able to see the primers as clearly I'd think, but you could still see them. Ten thou would probably get it done, but if it wouldn't, light glue would allow easy removal & replacement with something thicker. 900F Edited by CB900F |

I have been using an RCBS for several years and it has
worked great every time. I have the older model and it is harder to change the shell holder in it than the new model, but it's not that hard. Wing master |

never saw the reason for a separt primer tool. I'm fine
with a single stage Rockchucker. Auto feeds have always jammed on occasion and un-jamming reduces any time saving. I have the correct shell holder in the press for all thre operations. Also when I prime, I put a seater die half way into the press. this blocks any gas should a primer go off when seating primer. In 50+ years of reloading, I've never had a primer go off unexpectly...but it could happen. Started loading with the case blocked during primer seating...old habits don't die. Do I need a primer tool??? just thoughts. |

Well, I took the Lyman back to Sportsman's, w/o issue.
The only problem was that she asked, "Does it work correctly or does it just not do what you need it to do?" (or something like that) I was stumped because I thought that that it was not working correctly and it didn't do what I needed to do. I got the RCBS. I went to Cabelas beforehand...man their selection stinks. They only had the Lyman. At Sportsman's I also checked out the new Lee. The Hornady was plastic wrapped, so I was limited there. They did not have the new Lee Bench Prime (but they had 3 types more than C's did). I will post an update on how well the RCBS works, as soon as I test it out...tonight. I talked to my friend, hes says that he loads 1,000's or rounds a year w/his Lee. He also said that he may have the part that I need. I am going to make the part that I broke...not sure w/what yet. The reason you use a hand-prime is so you don't have to touch the primers. You dump the primers in the tray, put the lid on, and go from there. It alters the process, as you clean, de-prime (then possibly re-clean), trim and size, prime and then put the case back in the press. I am also loading pistol ammo...where 100 rds is not all that many. |
