Well then, if a nice model 66 passed under your eye, would it be up for consideration? All it is, is a stainless 19. 900F |

Not for sale I don't. Was just askin' that if you found one, would you go for it or turn it down? The early guns, the P&R ones, if they're original, will have a stainless rear sight also. However, many owners replaced the rear with a blued one because then the contrast made the front sight much easier to see. But, you shouldn't pay a premium price for the gun if it does have the blue rear. Unless, of course, the stainless rear also comes with it. Hah! Just try & find the proper rear stainless sight at a gun show! I think you'd pay less for one made out of gold. So I guess what I'm saying is that if you want a practical use gun, the blue rear is OK as long as you don't pay too much. An all original early P&R gun will command a premium to the collector crowd. 900F |

900f. I have always been a lot more of a fan of blued guns, but I do see the benifit of stainless. I have a few collectable Smiht&Wessons but most of my guns are shooter grade. I enjoy shooting them more than looking at them and waxing them. I will keep your information in mind if I run across a 66. It is funny how people modify their guns and don't keep the old parts together with the gun. I would bet their is a lot of stainless sights laying loose in drawers all over the country and the guns are long gone. Same with original grips. Wing master |

27 are nice but an N frame, heavier. the 19s are on a K frame lighter and just fit my hand.

Oh yeah, I know the differences between the N and K frames. Also the L, J, and I frames to boot. But man, a well set up 27-2, which is also a .357, is just the beast for load work-up and accuracy testing. Very few of those factory triggers ever needed any work. The patridge front blade is cool too. 900F |

Thats a good point about the patridge sight. The 3 1/2, 4, and 5 inchers usually have a ramp front sight. I do like the Patridge better for shooting. For me the 5 inch barreled model 27 balances better than the 6 incher. All of the S&W's I have have great triggers. The model 19 above has a target trigger and even though the pull weight and crispness is probably the same, it feels better than any other trigger I have. Wing master

If you like the N frame there are plenty of ways to go. 357, 10mm, 41 mag, 45 Colt (my favorite) and then there is always a 44 mag. The 27s are getting very pricey these days, a Model 28 would probably fit the bill just as well and they don't command a premium, yet. bob Edited by BobR |

That's the truth, I have 41mag and 45 Colt, why would I even think about a 44 mag. For some reason I hit 41mag and called it good. I don't shoot heavy bullets so there was no need for a 44 mag. bob |

Guys, just popped in and saw this thread for the first time. Thought I'd add my two bits. I don't live where I feel comfortable leaving a firearm in a vehicle unattended 24x7, 365 days a year, so my "truck" guns have always been as-needed when I went out about. Now if I were living out west on a ranch, away from civilization, I'd likely keep something in my work truck that I drove around the spread. I imagine I'd carry something handy for varmints, like a Marlin lever gun chambered in 218 Bee, or maybe some kind of European double chambered in 20ga/22 Hornet. Also might stash a plain Jane 1911 45 with a few xtra mags, or mid size frame SW in either 357 mag, or 44 mag, but keep loaded with 38 sp. +P or 44 sp., and some mag loads stored in there too.
Now what I do have and use is a "Tractor" gun I keep in the tool box when out and about on the tractor for use against rats/snakes/etc. It's an older Browning Buck Mark that I put a short stainless slab-side bbl on, and had a full flap, leather holster made for it to keep it from being banged up with the tools. It goes back in the house with me at the end of the day. What about "BARN" guns? I keep a .22 rifle out in the barn. A while back, after my father passed away, I came across a junky looking 22LR lever action in his shop I didn't know he had. No idea when or where he picked it up. It's a Browning BL-22, no bluing left on it, and broken forearm band. Function is all good, bore is mint, wood stocks are beautiful with a lot of handling marks and finish wear, but no cracks, chips or gouges. Thought it would make a great Barn gun. Well when I researched how to disassemble for a clean and inspect, I discovered the rifle is an early "patent pending" version, and worth restoring to it's original glory. Sooo, not gonna be relegated to the barn after all. Edited by Goatlocker |
