Being a confirmed 45-70 junkie, I've added two to go with my No. 1 and 1895 GBL.  An H&R Buffalo Classic and a T/C Contender Carbine now live in the safe.  My go-to load for the No. 1 and lever gun is not appropriate for the two break actions, so I'm working up new ones.  Should I clean the barrel and then fire a fouling shot between bullet types and powders?  One set of loads is with a 300 Gr. Hornady HP, the other is a 292 gr. Lyman cast. The powders are 2400 and IMR-3031.  Any help is appreciated.  Thanks, 788

D is the guy you need for that info.

Usually fire only one powder and bullet combo when load developing, so I don't clean

Now I never shoot lead/cast bullets, My normal load is a hornady 300 gr , going 2400 fps that's HOT... I do have a Barnes 250 gr load that is a little over 2600 fps.
With my 45/70 I HAVE to foul the barrel when ever I clean it. At 100 yards she will shoot 6" high after clean it, even just one pull of the bore snake. Heat will change point of impact too. After 3 or 4 shots It is a must to let it cool or it ill be shooting 4" low hot.
All that said I would NOT clean between test shots...
