I have a short barrel .45 load I worked up for my commanders using a 200gr XTP. I reckon I'll start there, see what happens. I'm not shooting much anymore. Maybe this will get me back on the range for a while.

That looks good. What kind of ammo do you plan on toting around with it? Wing master |

It almost seems to me you have answered your own question. I would say get the Kimber, make the changes you need to make it your perfect CCW and then you will have the perfect carry gun. Not cheap, but neither is your safety. Wing master |

Ok, I've handled several, shot a couple, and I'm thinking P239 SAS Gen 2 (can only find two tone which I don't like), or a SA EMP or Kimber Ultra CDPII. Honestly, I don't much care for the grip on the P239, or the balance (very top heavy). My monkey hands just don't fit many small grips. I've got a natural bias to the 1911, and the Kimber Ulta is 4 oz lighter than the P239. I don't like series II parts or ambi safeties, so that would increase the already hefty price of the Kimber. I'm also going to put a XS 24/7 big dot sight on whatever I get, so night sights are a waste.
So, I guess I'm still open to suggestions. I did handle the HK compact and some other fuller frame pistols. You know what I REALLY liked? The Sig M11. Not really a compact CCW pistol, but I'd love to own one. |

Mule, my boy has a thing for the 229 tactical elite .45. It is a 15 +1, so it's not light. Other consideration is the Beretta,PX4 I think.

Mule; You might take a look at the new H&K's also. They do have convertible grip structures so they can size to your hand, are a little more concealable, and if they're anything like the USP compact I've got, reliable as a bucket of rocks. Yup, a little more expensive but as far as I'm concerned you get value for the money. I've had mine since 1997 & never had a problem. 900F |

I tried a Kahr P9. It was ok. Not crazy about striker guns. Anybody tried the Sig P239? I'd like to shoot one in 357 sig or 40 s&w.

I like my glocks 27 or 26 with the mag extention. You could look at kahrs, tried one and disliked the trigger. Food for thought.

I wouldn't count out a revolver. I have a S&W model 60 that I end up carrying more than anything else. If the grip size is a problem a Tyler T grip might help. Wing master |

There's a range near where I work. I'll see if they can let me try a few. I did have a Sig P232 (380) that actually fit my hand better than most small pistols, but I felt really under gunned with it. I kind of put the 9mm at my low end, although a 357 sig or better is preferred.

Any perticular caliber you are looking for? Maybe one of the double stack 9mm's I have a Ruger SR-9 and with the big back strap it fits me pretty good. The back strap is interchangeable. It shoots good and holds 17 rounds in the magazine. Wing master |

I'm thinking of a smaller, lighter weight CCW pistol. I've tried several non-1911 platforms, and found them lacking. Now, the rub is I have large hands. Even the Officer's model 1911 grips are small for me. I tried a Sig P938 9mm, and it was woefully under-gripped, even with the mag extension. Any suggestions?
I also nearly bought a Sig P229 357Sig, but the dang thing was heavier (unloaded) than a full frame alloy 1911! And thicker too. Edited by Muleskinner |
