No jsg, I don't think so.
I tend to think of step-ups in either cartridge power or the game I would hunt with them. As to power, I think a step up is either a 50% increase in bullet weigh (+ bigger diameter) or a 500 fps increase in velocity at the same bullet weight at same diameter. The Rem 8mm magnum achieves about a +500 fps in velocity over either the 8x57 or 30-06 with a 200 grain bullet. So I think Remington achieved a step up in power their 8mm Mag. The 325 WSM did not.

Nothing is "bad", the only thing I think is foolish is all the hype the manufacturers pump out about how much better the WSM are compared to the originals. I think the WSMs are fine, I don't have one, not saying I wouldn't, just don't believe they are any better than the originals I already have.

The 2 CF cartridges I use most are the 7mm/08 & 30-06. Hard to improve 'nuff on either one. there is a 7mm Rem mag in same gun rack for the "JIC" scenerio.

Honest, I get it.
So I take the 375 h&h and neck it down right? I'm gonna go down another rabbithole here. Same 375, straightened out, thickened head, steeper neck, then necked down? A 378-8mm! |

The WSM's are a great idea with a poor approach.

Love big guns.
BUT you just can't shoot 300 rounds all day at P dogs with a 416, just can't do it. They all have a place and nitch. 22 rim is what's needed for gophers, 223, 6mm, for P dogs. 308, 6.5's for deer. Yesterday we dusted off a couple hundred rounds at P dogs. Even at that the 22/250 and 243 we spent maybe $200 in ammo and $25 bucks in gas and maybe $100 in ware and tear on the truck. Just going with the 8 it would triple the cost of a day of fun... |

They all have their niche. Some are a little tiny sliver of a niche, but it's there!

Well, in summary ( LOL on that), the 325 WSM is dead and well burried.
IBD's original post had a good comparison all to the honorable 8x57 Mauser. The 325 WSM had an 8% velocity increase...not much. So what makes that increase? Is it the short fat design the inventors cries about? NO Is it the marketing genius of Winchester? NO Really simple the 8x57 is loaded to 56,000 pressure and the 325 is loaded to 65,000. More pressure, more velocity. Can the 8x57 just be loaded to 65,000, sure in a modern rifle. And it would surpass the 325. Nothing new here, just playing with the numbers. I ain't got no new fangled short fat cartridge!

A 200 gr Barnes in a Mauser runs about 2600 fps.
A 200 gr Barnes in an 8mm rem mag runs 3100 fps And a 200 gr Barnes in a 325 MSW runs about 2900 fps.

The closest cartridge to a 8mm bore size I own is in a classic rifle...a M94 in .32 Spl.

Interesting to look at the XPR rifles. Made in Viana, Portugal They look like a browning X bolt. Neither Browning nor winchester make guns in the USA. Neither actually make any rifles, merely import branded products from overseas made by others. to bad, another loss of american made goods.
With Remington on the ropes, it looks like Ruger is going to be the only source for an american made turn bolt gun. It does seem that foreign gun makers have the ability to market less popular cartridges, like the 325. Although sometimes, they list such items in their catalog but no models make it into import goods? I doubt the 325 WSM has any following in Portugal or Europe. |
