You see a lot of this in movies and on TV. A indoor firing
range is pretty loud so it must be almost destructive to the
ears inside a car.

I do know how loud a rifle and shotgun affects the ear drum at
a close discharge so that has to be many times worse inside
the confines of a vehicle?

Does anyone know about this?

Be careful what you decide to not like. Your wife may wear one. Your son may ride one. Your daughter may bring one home. You may have to have one someday.

As long as muzzle is outside of vehicle, not so bad. If you're shooting pistol inside car, you most likely have bigger concerns at moment, than ear damage.

Fella's;

I don't think there's any question about it. Unprotected
ears will suffer damage in that situation. How much damage
will depend on the exact circumstances, but I could see
extreme damage being possible.

Yes this has happened to my buddy. He just got off duty had a Chiefs
spl in his pocket. He was pulling it out of his pocket when it went off
missed his leg but cut the mic cord to the radio then hit the cable for the
gas peddle. The nearest house was 1 of the guys on the police board.
He hated to go up and ask for help

Several years ago I worked with a lady that had been out hunting with her husband and she put her rifle between the console and the seat with the muzzle down. I don't know what happend, but evidently she reached for it and it went off.

It was a .270 and she said a pickup will only go a couple miles before enough transmission fluid leaks out that it won't go any farther with a .270 sized hole in it.

She also said it felt like she had a needle sticking into her ear drum and lost a good percent of her hearing at that moment.

I am thinking that a rifle caliber touching off in an enclosed vehicle wouldn't be a good thing.

Edited to say, She also said that was a good way to piss off your spouse.

If the muzzle is inside; you would get 6 echoes, all very close together. So figure about 4-5 time louder than just outside; all hitting those little hairs in you inner ear about the same time!

D said it all. But I couldn't hear him. what

the .270 is a wannabe .280

but the noise level in a car would be horrendous at best
and really raise hell with the ears. Samchap why do you
ask??

Bear....come on!   Never even ever considered that route. Tut
I so get to watch a lot of old tripe on the TV while sitting
with the misses and a lot of that has much firearm shooting in
cars, trucks, trains and so forth and so on. I've been at the
local gun club pistol range and know what 38s can sound like
in there and a car or truck cab is a lot smaller. No one seems
to mind the noise as they keep right on with conversation and
no blood coming out their ears. I would think they would
shake their head a little and sound like Gollum at the least
for realizm.

I don't know anyone who has fired inside a vehicle either.
