every year I apply for tags in about 6 states; so I know the
glory of victory and the agony of defeat. This year like most years I got a doe tag for NY
state...great instant lottery system there. Yesterday I get a letter from NY DEC...surprise!! They said they didn't sell enough doe tags to get their
required harvest number of doe whitetails in my WMU. SO THEY SENT
ME ANOTHER TAG FREE. Is this the wave of the future? When all the old guys
that hunt die off, will the fish/game people induce folks to hunt to keep the
herd down??? Will they someday pay hunters to reimburse us for managing
wildlife?? |

Must be lots of deer down there. It is pretty bleak up here. I did get a small 6pt, but nothing brag worthy. Haven't seen many at all. My oldest son turned 14 last week and been trying to get him on one here at home. Hard to keep the young ones attention when you sit for days and don't see anything. I'm in 6K, edge of the Tug Hill and too many doe permits/nuisance permits combined with harsh winters has decimated our deer population. I get a 6K permit every year for being a landowner, I have never filled it.

beautiful area your in. In October I fished the Salmon river for 4 days. 3 good salmon.
I hunt public lands, so most deer get pushed off 1st day. But state forest is a beautiful place tpo sit and watch; I really don't expect much action. Over the years I've got 109 deer, so I reallt don't need to shoot another one (just a tough job gutting & drag). But I understand your son's boredom, especially today with all the instant gradification. It isn't like the video games, LOL. Nice he is getting out. It is 4:30 and I'm ready to go...weather map shows heavy rain and high winds in the next 2 hours...maybe just sit in car and suck coffee. still it beats working. Saw a bear yesterday. Happy Thanksgiving.

Bear, I live 10mi from the Salmon river and I have never went salmon fishing! It is nice here, the weather gets rough, but I can deal with that. What I have a hard time dealing with is the ridiculous politics. I have had some good luck hunting here, but you can see a huge drop in the deer population. I am old enough to have the patience to wait it out, or sneak around. Not the case with the kids! My oldest one is pretty patient, but I want him to at least see a deer! Montana spoils me!

You could take him to Montana. But doing that too early might ruin it for local whitetail? Deaddog on here took his son out to Wyoming this year. Kid got a nice antelope, see pics on his post.
I fished the Douglason Salmon Run area, nice river. their rules are impossible even for an attorney; very poorly written. I stayed in Licona, near Sandy River SF. For 40 years I backpacked the Moose River flats. Great outdoor area you live in, even has ST Lawrence and 1,00 islands area. Planning to go back up that way next fall (salmon). Maybe we could get together for a beer or coffee? Rain at camp today; so I put up storm windows, cleaned gutter, put boat 'stuff' in basement...then drove home to w. PA. Windy and rain. Just unpacked the car from the NY trip. will pack it tomorrow for a week in Central mountains of PA chasing the bambi. Different 'stuff', including rifle 260 Rem Kimber.

Bear, my wife teaches and my boys attend Sandy Creek school. When I was in high school I worked at the cleaning station at Douglaston! My parents have leased a camp on the 1000 Islands for 25yrs, it is an incredible area. I want to take my boys and nieces to Montana, the problem is skipping school for the 8-10 days. Oldest niece is in college, next is a senior, my oldest 10th grade and youngest is in 6th, so it will be a few years before they can skip out for a week or so. It is an incredible trip out there, one they will never forget! PM me next time you come up fishing, we can meet up.

MapleHill,
I truly believe that your kids would learn more on a trip to Montana than they would learn in school for those 8-10 days. Just my thoughts. Wing master

You are certainly welcome. Usually 4 days, I usually stay 7 to hunt coyotes or fish. We center on Great Falls area.

Wing, I agree, however, mother is a school teacher and she does not feel the same way!
Bear, I am well aware of the gopher shoot and would LOVE to bring my boys out there, however, it is 1 week off from their spring break week from school...again...no bueno from the boss.
