Two days hunting in those old worn down Appalachian mountains. Had my son so I could hunt deep in the eastern forests (he drags).

Well, day one we hiked in about 4 mi from the truck at the end of a 2 mile jeep train. I'm a sitter so I pitched a ground blind near scraps/rubs and droppings a a 3 way crossing.    Noon we then went straight up to the ridge of Scrub near Tuscarora mountain. reminded me of elk hunting in Utah last month.

Day two, same thing, different mountain ridge.

Saw nothing either day. But I had a terrific time.

did I mention it was 29-34 oF with a fine to medium drizzle both days! And we had thick fog and low into the mountain clouds. 25 mile drive to motel over three ridges, no gaps to cross, with fog/rain/clouds etc.

Just got in vodka in hand now.

rest wed. quick range trip with 7 mag, then out again.

Stay with them Bear.

The Vodka sounds good. I have a whole new respect for Vodka after trying your potato Vodka.

Follow up. hunted fri-sat. no sunday hunting allowed.

Cold both days with fog to thick to shoot 5 yards.
Saw zero on Friday.

Saturday fog lifted at 11:15 am sunny.

my nephew shot a nice mountable 8 pointer.
At 11:30 my bro' shot a 190# buck, BIG 8 point. My two brothers and I dragged the big one out, Average age 71. And I'm in the best shape, not saying to much. The hoist I made got that big sucker up on my deer carrier.

Got them both out and cleaned sitting in cold garage, by 6pm; beverage hour!

Now, I get to go again at 4PM tomorrow. I like seasons when I can hunt for 4 months. Shooting something just spoils the fun.

Cock-a-doodle-do to you you old rooster.
Still got it in ya.

Though....I do wonder about the possibility of that 4 mile
drag. I remember what happens with a 300 yard drag through
thick young spruce.

BEAR;

Congratulations to you and "the crew"! Our season is
basically just a bit more than one month. Sometimes the
females get irritated because the honey-do list is a total
non-starter in many households in the state during that
period.

Like D, I can only take 2 days in a row deer hunting, butt drags and disturbs the deer.

After 2 days, I stayed at home today and studded out 10 foot of basement wall, plus limber yard trip.

3 am wake up tomorrow.

Unfortunately, only a few retired old farts out. So no deer moving, and I must hunt the tops and the ridges; so to be able to get the deer out.

But the 'hunt' is what I like, killing a critter is secondary.

The rifle season is over yesterday at 5pm.

Two weeks, but Sundays are NO HUNTIN LEGAL. So we had a 12 day season.

I saw few deer but hunted hard for 9 of those days. 5 alone.

Half hour after sunset hiking back to the truck with pack, blind, rifle, and shooting stick....I felt great. Body felt like 50 again. feet didn't even hurt (nerve dead??)

It is a little sad as one place I hunted 1 hour from home was just sold to be made into an Interstate next year. 25 years of having that place to hunt, a strip mine from the late 1940s. But I got to see it grow from acid/coal wastes into some nice primitive country. Had to reminisce walking out. Past place I shot deer, rabbits, grouse, and my last woodcock ever. Still have a beaver pelt hanging on the wall to remind me of the beaver ponds there. DD this is the area I took you to on one of your flights in.

Sad, but moving on to develop some other close spots.
