Saw a thing the other day. Said that cotton tails were running wild in WY and MT. that they were listed as varmints and unlimited shooting.
Is that true? Have they always been that bountiful in those states? or is this something new?

No bounty on them anymore.
But yes there like shooting gophers/P dogs, shoot at will. No not to many years ago they where very thin in most places. The up surge is more in urban rather than rural areas. Way more out of town as of late now too.

We used to have tons of 'em; still do in town, but the coyote and bobcat populations have gone so crazy that we just don't see many in the wild anymore. Too bad; they're pretty tasty.

They go in cycles here.
If you look at the amount of dead rabbits on the highway you can see how they are doing. A few years ago they had an article in the local news paper, The headline was something about our fur lined highways. No kidding, on good rabbit years you see a dead one on the highway every 50 to 100 feet. I always figured the next few years were good coyote years. Wing master

Cottontails still scarce this area. Even the snowshoe or Varing hare nearly extinct around here.
Someone reports seeing a easter bunny occasionally tho. |

They seem to be doing pretty good here in town. I have seen several in my yard and unless I've missed a litter, we have had 2 groups of babies at work. We saw the first babies in March or April then about 3 weeks ago we saw another bunch of little ones.
Maybe one more litter before winter? Wing master
