Topic: Bushnell Sportview Posted: 31 December 2003 at 12:35 |
I am a Simmons fan, you know that. I talked my friend into putting a Simmons on his 30-06, only because I found a used one in a power range he wanted at a good price. I've had his old scope, the sportview, laying around here for a while and thought I'd put it on my Daisy. This is just a pump up air only, not a spring gun. I've had scopes on it before and did ok, this one is crap. I can physically see the crosshairs jump if I tap on the body, how he ever hit anything with it on his '06 I'll never know. It was on for a couple hundred rounds, astetically still very good condition. I also got an eye-ache and slight head-ache after using it for a short bit. I still feel cross eyed. Just a little info, I know very few around here would even look at this line, but just sharing.

BKC;
As a side note, I like Simmons also. Had an experience much like yours with the Sportview with a BSA this past summer. A fella bought a package .22 rifle & scope at one of the larger sporting goods stores here. It was a Mag-Tech gun with a BSA rimfire scope on it. The glass in that scope wouldn't have done justice to the bottom of a coke bottle.
I know it was a bottom-end scope, but jeez! Helen Keller woulda gotten a headache from that POS.
And with that, ironically enough, the scope I may wind up putting on my Savage .22 is a Bushnell Legend 5 X 15 A/O mil-dot. It's the only thing I can find with mil-dot & A/O in a moderate power range. Everything else is a 6.5 X 20 & that's too much size, magnification, & weight for a walking around gopher gun.

Funny you mention the BSA. I've got one in a 6-24x40 with mil-dot that I got a while back to put on my .223. After 1000 rounds or so it quit holding it's zero, but is just fine on my .22. The eye releif is a little critical, but the glass is way better than that sportview. I think the higher end scopes, more than $20 value, are better. I've thought about maybe getting a 6-18 banner, but not for a while if I do, maybe still go another simmons, or maybe something better. It's nothing I need, so it can wait.

No, he's very conventional about things like that. Not certain that he's really mine anyway. After all he's right-handed & likes Remingtons. Weird blood type too.
But, on the other hand, he drives a chevy, chases women, & drinks my beer. The wife says he looks like me too. There are conflicting opinions as to whether or not that's a good thing.

You have to remember that the Sportview was the starter scope in the Bushnell line-up.
You get what you pay for and that is reflected in what you pay for them. Personally, a Sportview would only go on something like a .22 and even then only until something else better came along...
I see they call the lower end scope a "Sportsman" now...

Sir North;
I've been told by a salesman, for what that's worth, that the Bushnell Legend is the scope that's next under the Elite 3200. It seems to be priced that way, but in these things I like getting another opinion. As you seem to be our resident Bushie expert, what's your take on the question?
Thanks, 900F

The Sportview is actually a "line" of low cost scopes. There are 22cal 3/4 inch scopes and others in the line.
Also in the line is the 3-9x about 32 mm. It is referred to in the industry as the promo scope. This is because it is usually sold as a loss-leader; often advertised at $42 or such. I have a lot of rifles most have Leupolds on them. A few years back when I was at a distributor he had the 'promo' scopes by the case for $19.20 each. I bought a dozen. I have found them to be a good scope, and have had them on everything from 22rf to 416 mags. Never had a failure. I always carry one on my extended hunts in case of failure of my Leupold. They are new and in the box, so I often give my extra emergency scope to a packer or guide who has a beatup rifle with open sights and says I got to get me one of them scope". I usually mail a weaver mount w/bases to him when I get home. I've made a lot of Indians happy.
True the quality of the glass isn't like the VX Leoupold, but it is more than adequate for 99% of hunters. I seldom recommend them to guys that spend $500 on a rifle, as an extra $300 doesn't seem out of line. I had a Sportview on a 338 mag that I lugged around for years, in Canada and other harsh locations. It never failed.
I still have a 4x sportview on my deer slug 20 ga gun. Very light shotgun (H&R Topper) and the Sportview is very light also. It takes one hell of a kick on that light gun, but it has never missed a deer for me.

CB - The "Legend" series is just starting to show up in Canada right now. I can't say as I've even seen one close up. Our local gunshop has started to stock them, so I should take a look. They also sell a lot of the 3200/4200 scopes, Trophy's and Banners.
I'll take Bear's word for it that the Sportviews are "good to go". Most of what I have from Bushnell/B&L are the Elite 3000's/3200's. Bar none probably the best bang for your buck. I also have an Elite 4000 3.5-10x40mm, Trophy's 3-9x40 & 1.75-5x32mm, Banner's D&D 3-9x40mm & 1.5-4.5x32mm.
Right now, though I've also started to also pick up a few Leupolds...
Regards, Marcus.
