What would you recommend to a newbie for a bedside piece?

	Newbie as in not much shooting? I'd say 870 12 gauge no choke BB's Newbie as in home defense ? I'd say a Judge 410. Just my thoughts. PS don't come creeping around my knight stand... Just saying! Sorry I did not see the " Pistol" part in the question. My pick would still be the same. Very few thinks bring fear to an intruder as a pump shot gun loading!!! 	I would think the best night stand pistol is one you can handle and shoot well. It doesn't need to be small or light so if you like 1911s that would work, or a revolver. I have my Glock 19 close to my bed, although where I live I don't have much going on to worry about, the benefits of living in the middle of nowhere.

	For about the last 3 years I have had a 4 inch model 19 Smith & Wesson on my side of the bed. On my wife's side is a 4 inch model 15 Smith & Wesson. They are the same gun except the 19 is a .357 and the 15 is a .38 Special. They are both loaded with 38's. The reason for the revolvers is that if I'm sound asleep and need it all I have to do is grab it and pull the trigger. The same for my wife. Mostly because she doesn't shoot very much. What would you pick Bear? Wing master

	Shotgun in a bedrail holster. Yes they make them. Stand gun needs to be one that is accessible, easy controls and reliable. Accuracy is negligible as distance is short. Should be something you take to the range often and have a feel for as second nature. Revolver is the goto for most.

	I think your choice Wing is what I'd recommend. I see people that don't shoot much at the range. If they have an auto, it takes them about 10 minutes to figure out how to operate it. Just to complex for a tense emergency use. I call the double action revolver...the cap gun design. everyone can instantly fire one. A fishing buddy of mine is a pistol nut. Don't know how often he shoots, but he is CCW gun with a different gun all the time. Coming back from fishing we hit a buck, broke it's back. He had a Bretta tip-up in22lr. When he tried to shoot the buck at 6 foot range, he hit the flip-up lever thinking it was the safety. barrel flipped up and threw the 22 cartridge toward the deer! he jsut wasn't familiar enough with that gun even though it was his CCW???

	I totally agree Bear. I have probably shot between 5000 to 7000 rounds in the last year out of my 1911. The most stress I have has was the beep of a shot timer at a match. Their is one thing I have learned from shooting matches. I can plan every shot of a stage and go over it several times in my head and when that beeper goes off I will do something wrong on the longer stages. (stages can have up to 34 rounds) If someone just kicked my front door in I want to be able to grab a revolver and pull the trigger. If I have a round that for some reason doesn't go off I just pull the trigger again. I'm not sure how I would react under that kind of stress. Wing master

	I understand Wing. And remember you are an experienced shooters, with years of gun handling and shooting animals. Think how a 45 year old woman with no training, who bought a 9mm auto and shot half a box of ammo, would respond 3 years afte having last shot it. Just donating an auto pistol to a thug. I've mention this to new CCW people and LGS counter guys. But the gun deales keep pushing the autos, and all the women love how a short barrel 9mm auto fits in their purse and hand. For a home protector gun; how it "feells' doesn't matter as these people will not be shooting it after 3 week from purchase. Poor choices.

Open up!" cuz they don't want you to have time to react--they think they're safer that way, and nobody's gonna flush some evidence on them. 	Couple things here Windy. Your right about the no-knocks. I know enough of the local PD/LEO's that they should know better then ever attempt that with me. I met a couple of them on my porch with a 50 cal because they pulled up short, shut off their lights and then walked up on my porch at 3am. We're still friendly, just a healthy respect to call first or make themselves known before entering unannounced. I have no issue if they want to swing in on a slow night for a good cup and some popcorn. Just they should expect my healthy support of the 2nd amendment if I am unaware of who's knockin! Your signature, I used to have the same philosophy on magnums. Once snuck up on a whitetail in a field with a bow and shot it at less then ten feet. My spidey senses were spot on as well as my ability to move quite stealthful. As the years and surgeries have stacked up, I still get around good but sneakin in close days have passed. The shots have gotten a bit longer and the optical sights better. I still don't "NEED" a magnum, just feels nice knowing the capability is there for "IF" I do.

	My vote for newbe to guns for bedside defence would be a quality double action Revolver in .38 Spl. Then some training And Practice.

	I have to disagree Windy. I have a couple buddies I shoot with that are city cops here in town. I asked them about no knock warrants. They said that it is their policy here that they don't do them. They both said "That's a good way to get shot". They also said that they would rather have someone flush drugs than have anyone get shot. The cops or the bad guys. I'm not sure if the local Sheriff's department does no knock raids or not. Wing master

	well, after all my touting a 4" 38 double action revolver. My bed has a built-in compartment for my S&W model 39. a double/single action 9mm. been my go to personal weapon since 1967. My mind doesn't even know how the safety/decocker works. But my finger just do IT. No thought after 10,000 rounds. just seems to fire on it's own.

	Good bird shooters are like that many don't have a bead on there shot gun. The gun just comes up and it's where it is supposed to be and it goes off at the right time???? I do not have that problem Edited by d4570 - 16 July 2020 at 11:24

	All my shooting is that way. No beads on my shotguns, just a distraction so I file them off. With bad bad eye now I need a fiber to make sure I'm using the correct eye.
