Topic: Best All Around Magnum Posted: 20 June 2003 at 17:15 |
Hey guys, what is the most versatile magnum for hunting in the western states. I want to have something other than my 2 .30-30s and my aught six for when i move out there. The choices are: 7mm Remigton Magnum and .300 Winchester Magnum. I want to stick with Ruger rifles, because Mr. Ruger has helped feed me and has been very kind to me over the years, so i want to make sure he gets a steady cashflow. I know that these are limited options, but which one of these is more versatile?

TAS is right, there really isn't a bad choice here. Both have killed their fair share of Western big game. The .300 can be loaded with a bit heavier bullet. Something to consider if that kind of thing is important to ya.
7 years back, I had a .300 WinMag in the Ruger M77. Great rifle. Accurate as heck and comfortable to shoot, ta-boot. Traded it in on a 7mm STW. Also a great cartridge. You might give it some consideration, as well.
I've got a lot of respect for both the .284 and .308 caliber classes. Classic big game getters. Good luck with the decision. >> klallen

Hey Korey, the only way I could get a 7mm STW is if i went the single shot route, which i may be willing to do.

i'm a huge 7mm nut. i'd be happy w/ any 7 magnum. my favorite is the 7 rem mag...but, in all honesty, the 7 magnums are no better than the 30 magnums.
as far as the stw goes, i routinely see them on the used racks. keep your eyes open.

Ok, should I get the 8 lb. Ruger #1 Sporter, or the 7 lb. Ruger m77mk2 lefty bolt action in .300 Win Mag. The .300 Winnie seemed better because it is available with heavier bullets.

you'll find that the more you hunt, the lighter you want your rifles to be...

"Ok, should I get the 8 lb. #1 or the 7 lb. m77mk2"
I know there's a right answer here, but I'll be damned if I can come up with it. How do ya pick ?
One thought might be if you tend to rely heavily on a back-up shot, go with the bolt action. BUT, the repeatability of a #1 can be just as fast, with practice. Done by holding the back-up cartridges between the fingers of the supporting hand, alla the speed reload practices for the big African doubles.
I really like the clean, simplistic looks of my #1 but no more than the rugged dependability of my M77. Honestly, I don't know how you're gonna make this call. They're both gonna be accurate a heck. Don't think we'll be able to help ya with this one. Personal choice time .
By the way, I do believe you'd really enjoy an STW. The right 160 gr. bullet will do just about anything you'd like it to do. But, let's not muddy the H20 here. The WinMag's been decided on. Go with that. You'll like it, as well. Now tackle the action question. Good luck with that !!! Later. >> klallen

I think you made the right choice of cartridge. The 300 win is a great cartridge out heer. Itook my first mule deer buck with a model 77 300 shooting a 180 grain partition. The number 1 sure has class but in the woods hunting that really makes little difference. The only point I would make regarding the rifle itself is that I would get a blue action. Ruger stainless is a little to shinny for me, it might night pose a problem but i,v seen them cause a glare problem at the range. ...tj3006

NH,
06 will do you fine for a while take your time and find a good light 300 mag, or wsm, wood weight varies. You can cut an extra 1/2 lb of rifle weight by finding one with lighter wood. For the record I have a abolt 300wsm, I traded a 77MKII 06 (bad idea) when I got the 300, should have held on to the 06 it was a 23" barrel, and it would shoot .38" groups at 100yds.

I have been reading a lot of stuff about ruger's accuaracy which really helps my situation, seeing as I get a really accurate out of the box rifle made in my town. I can reload a number one at a decent speed, but having one shot makes you need to make sure you have a good first shot. The #1 has a 2 inch longer barrel than the m77, which would reduce muzzle blast of the winnie. I can shoot #1's fairly well, and the extra weight would help hold the gun easier. They main thing that i can see wrong with the #1 is that it is more expensive than the m77, but it will be easier to find than the lefty bolt in .300 winnie. I think i have decided on the #1 at the moment, but that may change at any time, because that is just the kind of person i am.

Ok, now that i have decided on the #1 in a walnut/blue form, should i get the #1B, without iron sights, or the #1S with iron sights? This is proabably more of a looks decision than a functionablility decision. What do yall think?

if you are going to use a scope, there is no need for irons, in my opinion. they become nothing but brush-catchers.

I have used rifles that had a scope and iron sights and i never had a problem with them snagging on brush. Just incase it is raining and the scope fogs up, it is nice to be able to just pop off the scope and hunt when iron sights.
Ok i think i have made my final decision. I will get the #1S with the iron sights because i guess i just am not ready to be able to have them, and not get them.

use a decent scope and weather conditions are a non-issue.
also, to me, rifles w/ irons and scopes look silly. once i scope arifle, the irons come off. besides, most factory irons are garbage, anyway.

NH - My vote goes for the .300 Win Mag. I started out with a tangsafety Ruger 77 [24" barrel] in it about 10 years ago. Sold it after I got a Browning A-bolt composite stalker [26" barrel] around 1996. Both were/are extremely accurate rifles. Good luck!
Regards, Marcus.
