Over the years some rifles have had the safety backwards.  Standard safeties are forward to fire.  Backward safeties are rearward to fire.

sort of very, very stupid of todays manufacturers to make them that way, but!!!

Marlin had their 22 rf bolt guns working backward for years.  then after a few lawsuits and settlements they changed them to standard forward safety configuration.  But never offered conversion for the million rifles out there!  so some  identical models have forward safeties, some of the same models have rearward safeties....talk about big time liability.  WOW

What got me on this,  is a friend that knows I like CZ rifles asked about getting a bolt 22 rf for his 6-10 year old kids to learn to shoot with.  He knows I have a lights-out shooter in a CZ 452 and a  455 CZ.

After thinking on this I realized, a backward safety model is too dangerous for a kid to learn on.  So I told him to NOT buy a CZ 22.

What do you think, did I give good advise?

I think best advice is, don't rely on safety period. Like anything mechanical, it can fail.

I taught my kids and grandkids, empty chamber until ready to shoot, when ready to shoot, load round, line up shot, take off safety, then place finger inside guard, place finger on trigger, last step before pulling trigger and breaking shot.

The best place for kids to learn shooting, is to join 4H air-rifle team. http://4-hshootingsports.org/ Oldest grandson's almost old enough, to join.

You can download (free download link below) course book, it covers safety and proper techniques, for BB gun and on up to small bore.

For my youngest grandson, I got Savage Rascal, seven year old has been "breaking" it in for the youngest. He does much better with it than "his" TC single shot 22. I don't know if rebate and sale is still on, I paid less than $100 OTD, I should have got a couple, for when kids shoot at house.

We learned on quality 22 single shot bolt, it had comp sights on it, (Uncle's old smallbore rifle) but peep sights are good enough for kids and much better, than buckhorn style.

That was good advice Bear.

I think teaching a beginning shooter to shoot with a "backwards" safety would be sorta like teaching them that backwards is forward.
