Fella's;
I recently came into possession of a new Smith K617. It was very nicely wrapped also I might add. However, I do have some questions. Part of the reason I had put the gun on my Christmas wish list is that I have some K-frame target grips just lying around so to speak. Therefore, even though I felt that the stock rubber grips that came on the gun were fairly obnoxious, I thought it wouldn't be a problem. I also know that older K17's have square butt frames. Imagine my surprise when I removed the offending rubber grips and discovered that my new K-gun has a bird's-head type grip frame. I'll admit to being surprised enough to have muttered terms such as: "Mouth-breathing, drooling idiots", and worse. Nonetheless, I still very much want to consign the rubber grips to someplace dark and warm in the immediate vicinity of Springfield Mass., and replace them with a proper set of nice wooden target grips. So, would anyone have some good suggestions as to where I can obtain target grips for a round butt K-frame? Or, am I going to have to bother my previously calm, cool, and collected pistolsmith & ask him about attaching a square frame grip to this gun? And, come to think of it, does anybody know when it was decided to change from a square butt configuration to round? I know better than to ask why it was done, as there can't be a correct answer. But, if anybody can direct me to a single person responsible I would appreciate that. And, while you're at it, the location of the nearest dark alley to the plant? 900F |

900f, Look here you will find lotsa grips. Anything from really high dollar to good prices on factory grips. Also, a good bunch of guys. http://smith-wessonforum.com/accessories-misc-sale-trade/ Their is also a lot on ebay. I don't know much about them, but they make a round to square butt conversion grip. If you read that forum you will find information on them. I have an old set of square butt K frame magnas I would be more than happy to send you to see if they could be made to fit. They are not in good enough condition for much else. But they would make a good pattern so you didn't ruin a good pair. I am not sure who the scoundral is who made the change to round butt. but they have been available for quite a while. Do they still make square butt grip frames? If you find out who this guy is he will probably be the same guy that came up with the internal lock. That one whizzes me off/ Wing master |

DD; Your 617 is a square butt? If I could get the grips I've got on the gun, there'd be a helluva gap where the backstrap curls forward. Wouldn't look good at all. 900F |

No it's a round. The old large frame 17's were square.

I wondered if they changed something? Is the 17 still built on the K frame? Wing master |

I'm an old butt guy, at least my wife and kids say so. There are loads of wood S&W factory grips at the gun shows and most are new and reasonably priced. I bought a set last year for 3 guns. IIRC the exterior size of the grips are what you need to thing about. they have a wood grip that makes the round frame look like a square frame (almost). the wood is inletted to bring the frame roound portion inside the grip, so it gives a full hand grip. I suspect that Smith just wanted to make one grip/frame and most people today are looking for round grips for CCW!!! either way Santa was good to you. |
