i haven't had a chance to do a lot of work w/ my 7-08 just yet... frontrunner favorites indicate that rl-15 and varget are about the best choices in the 7-08 w/ either bullet.

never worked w/ a 260, so nothing there. however, given that it is the same basic case as the 308 and 7-08, and rl-15 and varget do well in my 308 and 7-08, i'd say your best start w/ the 260 is maybe varget.

Hunting is not a matter of life or death; it is much more important than that.

Varget was made for the 7-08 (I don't mean literally, but they sure do work together quite nicely).  I use a max charge of 44 gr with a 140 Nos BT.  I see no reason why it wouldn't work well with the 120 gr. Barnes or 145 Speer.

A good alternative would be 4350 (H or IMR) and H-414.  I've shot 150 Partitions that were VERY accurate using RL-19, but the velocity was a little slow... 2600 fps. (a little slow only in that I thought it would have been around 2700+, but I don't think a deer or elk would be able to tell the difference).

150 grain 7mm bullets @ 2600 FPS would pretty much duplicate the .300 Savage and would have a slight edge as range increased. That would make for a very mild load with very serious big game potential out to 200 yards or so.AW

I was looking through some targets and found that 7 or so years ago I was working on a load with the Speer 130 gr. bullet.  With a full charge of H-414 I had 3025 fps... pretty darn close to a .270 with a bullet that is only .007" greater in dia.  Hmmm, I may have to start working on that again.

thanks for the feedback re the 7-08 and 260.  I tried 44 grains of 748 with the 120 BT in the 7-08  and it shot well.  Still got to work something up for the 260 and will probably break out the Varget and Hornady sst's (129g).  My problem is that I want a group under 1 in. in any of  my rifles.  My new ruger 77 compact in 7-08 is rather contrary but I'm still trying.  My Rem mdl 7 in 260 is a shooter with several different bullets and loads.
Life is a cruel teacher!
