Just wondering.

In a 5"  1911 handgun is there a significant difference in recoil between the same gun in 45 auto  vs the same gun in 40 S&W?????????

I have no idea apples for apples but I do know...
My buddy has a 40 carry gun and he has an old 1911 I have shot both.
The 1911 is a WAY bigger and heaver gun and shooting military round ball ammo Has a LOT more recoil then what ever he runs in his S&W carry gun.ConfusedConfusedConfused

40 is a wannabe. Think of it as a small step up from the 9mm. 45 acp vs 10 mm is a more even run for recoil and full house loads for the 10 are a bit more stout then the 45. Properly loaded they are the best two rounds for penetration and damage applied. If it's only going to be used as a home defense and plinker, get the 9 and save a little on the ammo. Load good critical defense loads for when it's not plinking time and call it at that. For carry and backup for trips were critters are involved use the 45 or 10. and use fast expanding light loads for home use so as not to over penetrate. I like the 1911 platform for comfort and feel and hate the plastics, not for function but for feel. Midsized auto's like the 92f I shoot well enough though they just don't have the same feel/ergonomics that I like. Dan Wesson revolvers on the other side of the coin make me feel like I have Trump hands! My DE takes some getting used to but it still works for it's purpose.

Shooting same weight bullet, in same platform, 40S&W will have slightly more muzzle blast(higher pressure) but recoil will be pretty close. Comparing 40S&W in a pistol built for 9mm and 45 in 1911, 45 is more controllable. If you're comparing 140gr 40S&W load to 230gr 45 load, recoil will be noticeable different.

I have several 9mm and 45s, never saw the need to add 40s&w, I have considered 10mm pistol though. Not much more recoil, in same sized pistol, than 45 and increased performance/penetration, for bears.

My personal taste runs to the 45. Been shooting that round for over 40 years. I find it to be very manageable. It provides greater terminal energy with less pressure than the 40. Much easier on the gun. Never really understood the logic of that 40 round. Seems to sit squarely between the 9mm snd the 45 in terms of performance but at a much greater pressure. Whatís the point? Well I guess itís cause it can get you greater magazine capacity over the 45 in like sized frames.

The S&W 40 cal came about as a reduction of the 10mm which the FBI said has too much recoil for their agents to handle and shoot well. Mag capacity may also now be a factor and "plastic" guns are more prone to reflect greater recoil as they are typically lighter than a steel 1911. With all the new bullet designs lately even the lowly 9mm is an impressive hitter..... the 40's and .45's gained also.

Slap on a heavier spring to the ole ACP and hot load the 45 to +P+....controllability goes down significantly but the terminal effects are the like of the 45 Colt modern factory loads of the moderate side. Effective.

I've got a Colt Delta Elite 10mm that has a .40 S&W barrel fitted to it for plinking. I don't notice much difference in recoil shooting .40 S&W out of it vs one of my USGI 1911A1's in .45ACP.

FBI picked after their disaster shoot out in Florida (they just didn't shoot their 38, 357, 9mms well).  But being gov't employees, they chose to blame it on their issue weapons...spend money to 'investigate a new FBI cartridge and new $$$ guns.  They stidied and picked the 100m.

Within a yea they realized they would HAVE TO HAVE lots of female special agents (JEH made every agent a "Special Ageny").  The femal recruits couldn't handle the 10mm so they 'slightly reduced, thereby giving birth to the 40 which femal agents still seem to have a problem with!!!!

My SIL picked up G20SF, for a decent price. He was impressed on how soft shooting it was for 10mm, until I pointed out, most factory 10mm ammo is loaded to 40S&W levels. He got a box of real 10mm ammo and saw difference. I wasn't fan of the SF model, but it fit SIL hand's better.

I've shot a G40, with a red dot, if I had need for another pistol, I'd look hard at one. I'm not sure, it's really got long slide 1911 beat, though double round count, for same weight/size, is pretty attractive, as is red dot mount.

Circa mid-1990's I was on the transitional instruction team when the agency I worked for converted over from S&W Model 10 .38 Special wheelguns to the Glock Model 22 pistol in .40 S&W. I would say only a very small percentage of the female members had a problem transitioning over. Certainly, no more than the male personnel at the time. Wonder what the issue is with the FBI on this then?

Could be that the girls hired in DC are smaller, smaller hands, weaker?

Big issue should be, not how powerful is the pistol you shoot; but how accurate are you with that pistol.

Well I carry both. I tote the .40 on my government funded job. I shoot better then midway in the Qualification course. We use 180 grain Hollow Point ammo now.

On my time I carry my 1911 in .45 with 230gr Premium Hollow points. Practice with either and recoil is of no concern. I hit well with either, because I work at it. Somebody's Life might depend on it, someday.
