Pretty small shoulder on the Whelen or anything else based on '06 brass when you get to .40 bullet.

375 Ruger looks pretty interesting.  But the bolt face might need to be opened?

HEY BEAR,,the .400 goes to 455-458 @ the shoulder by design,,the trouble in the old days came from people using '06 FL dies to save $$$,,HEY d,,.405 and 416 on the .338 are fairly common,,,espec. the 416,,I thought about it but don't want to modify my '98 action,,and so the .400 or .411 option

I've never had a .400 or .411 but I was looking at them very hard at one time. Did a lot of research on the case etc. Almost all things I've read says start out with .06 "Basic Brass" cases which are completely straight walled and FL size in the .400 or .411 dies. Trying to use 30-06 cases brings headspace issues due to the .06 shoulder being too small and too far back. The basic brass with it's "virgin" shoulder works much better. RD

Big O,

I did rebarrel on a Vz-24. When through the same decisions - 35W, 9.3, 375W or 400W!  I picked the 9,3.

What I realized I wanted, but couldn't get all the pieces to come together was:

A long straight walled 284 win case to make a 416/284!!!

PS: Even thought about doing a 416/376 Steyer

no,it headspaces on the shoulder.Yes cylindrical or '06 basic is the way to go on this one,,I don't have the patience for all the rigamaroll to do it the other way.

The 284 has been "big bored" years ago, from .338 on up with the .375/.284 the most popular( about 30 years ago!!!).

PacNor does a .400 with a .455 shoulder, but I like more,at least .458,,I don't know what the .411 hawk mikes, but it is supposed to be a more practical approach,,Z-Hat with do a .411 Hawk rebarrel for $500. all up.I have never known anyone who had one,(.400,.411),and have only seen 1 in the flesh.I understand there is a Howell version a well

The 10.75X57,,,now there is a cart. with shoulder issues!!!!
