Is there a "best" bullet and or factory load for deer or are all of them so closely matched in real world performance on deer as to be indistinguishable? Field reports and stories wanted.AW

The old Hornady Frontier 150 gr load worked very well for me, accounting for several deer, antelope, and an elk.

For reloading Speers 150 gr fp does the best in accuracy and velocity in my rifles, altho the Marlin will shoot Rem bulk 170's quite well.

Best would most likely be what ever shoots the best out of your rifle (s)

The most expensive bullet there is isn't worth a plug nickel if it don't go where its supposed to.

thus far in my 30-30 evaluations, i can tell you that federal classics suck. winchester 170 psp are ok, and remington 170's are best... i have not had a chance to get into handloading for it, yet, and i have no on-game performance, yet (well, i did pop a cat today, but don't think that is what you are after), but i cannot imagine a 30-30 bullet shot from a 30-30 that would fail.
Hunting is not a matter of life or death; it is much more important than that.

I'm leaning toward the theory that most conventional 150's are terminally peas in a pod (HP's and  X's excluded) on deer. 170's are pretty evenly matched inasmuch as the velocity combined with the sectional density almost guarantees they can't frag on deer. I do think that there may be some differences in penetration potential on bear, elk, or moose. I'd like to see a full layout .30/30 bullet test sometime like the .30/180 test that came out a few years back in Rifle or Handloader. That one was revealing.AW

out of remington 150-grainers.

It's one of those deals where "what works for me, may or may not work for
you." My current 336 likes the 170's as long as they don't say Remington. It
does like the Federals and Winchesters. Had a Win 94 some years ago that
shot 150's very wels but sprayed 170's all over the place. Seems like every
one of the 30/30's I have owned have had a favorite factory load. Had one
that shot just about everything well.

I am going to try out some Remington 150's since that is all the local gunshop had (what is this world coming to?) The gun has shot 170's since it's conception. Hope it shoots 150's cuz that is all i have

I guess flat points aren't good enough for lever actions any more? They seemed to do fine for the past...oh...100 some-ought years.

I have had good luck with the 150 gr. Remington Cor-Lockts for my .30-30. It did an excellent job on my buck last year. Will probably use it again this year. Especially if I go south to hunt.
