Hey guys, first, was the .264 a Winchester Magnum or Remington Magnum? Second, what case is it based on. I want to start a collection of lefty rifles but there are only 3 major companies that sell nice looking affordable lefty rifles. I.E. Ruger, Winchester, and Browning. I dont think i will ever buy a Remington, because i just dont like them. Yes they do look nice, but i just flat out dont like them. If I ever wanted a short action lefty then i would go with Remington, but right now i am looking at long action only. I can get lefty rifles in: .25-06, .270 Win, .280 Rem, 7mm Rem Mag, 7mm STW, .30-06, .300 Win Mag, .338 Win Mag and .375 H&H all affordably. I was thinking I could buy a rifle chambered for the cartridge  the .264 Mag is based on, and then rechamber it to .264 Mag. This would give me everything that I would need. I am already started off with the .30-06 which means i would only have to buy 9 rifles and then my quest would be complete! This would have me set for everything from Prarie Dogs with the .25-06 all the way up to Cape Buffalo with the .375 H&H. It would also get me into the High Powered Magnum group with the 7mm STW. I figure i could do this in about 10 years, if not sooner. What do you guys think?

Hey There NH Hunter

Am I gonna have to come up younder and take you northerner's(Yankee's) out for a Tikka shoot. They do make left handed rifles really nice ones I might add.

We got's to get you down south for awhile there youngin'.

You can make .264 case's from 7 mag shells if that helps any.

Just kidding about the Yankee thing.

Jus about any of the Belted mag casses will convert to .264 but I hope you mean rebarrel rather than rechamber. Personaly, if I had an 06 allready, I would go foe either a big step up .300 or .338 or a big step down, say 25.06. nothing wrong with the 264 but it and the 7 mag are only a medium step up. I answerd you last post on the favorite rifle thing. You must be married, I sold all my rifles to go to truck driving school a few years back. I have bought 7 in the last 3 years and I think I better plan a second safe !!!   Its easier to set prioriyies when you are single ! ...tj300

NH Hunter - The .264 Win Mag was announced in 1958 [which happens to be the year I was born]. It was based on a necked down .458 Winchester belted case. It was originally introduced in the Winchester Model 70 "Westerner" with a 26" stainless steel barrel. The .264 was also offered in the Rem 700 and the Ruger 77. [I just scabbed this info from the 7th Edition of Cartridges of the World].

There are at least a couple of posters on here who are readily familiar with the .264 Win Mag...Klallen & Eagleye. I myself have just had a .264 Win Mag put together on a Rem 700 "Classic" action [it was originally in 7mm Mag] using a take-off stainless steel barrel. Haven't tried it out yet. I have both factory ammo & just got a load of fresh brass to try. Will post more when I actually do fire this baby up.

Here's a pic of her:

Regards, Marcus.

That is what i meant. I was going to use rebarrel first, but then changed for some reason. Hey Tikka, i did find a Tikka Whitetail Hunter in .308 that is a lefty and that would mean no Remingtons!! YAHOOOOO!! Will Tikka make the T3 in a lefty form? I havent seen anything that they will, but i havent seen anything that says they wont.

NH_Hunter; North Logan has us pegged!! I'm one of the happy owners of the 264 Win Mag. I had 3, but disposed of one, and so have only 2 now. However, unlike yourself, I favor Remingtons, so mine are both.......you guessed it, 700's. One is a factory stainless barrelled rifle circa 1963/4, the other is a Pac-Nor barrelled ADL with a floorplate added. I love the 264 Win Mag, too bad it has teetered on the brink of obsolescence for so many years.

By the way, NL, What barrel is on that 264 of yours? Have you shot it yet to see how it works? Post and let us know. Regards to all, Eagleye.

Never argue with an idiot. They will drag you down to their level & then beat you with experience!

Eagleye - The barrel is a 24" Remington 700 factory stainless steel barrel. When I got it [I bought the barrel off a guy down east], it had some kind of matte factory blueing over the stainless, and although excellent inside had some blueing wear on the outside. I just had my 'smith blast the old blueing off the barrel & install it in a matte stainless finish.

Since I wasn't going to put sites back on it and it didn't matter to me that the original factory writing "lined up" he just dialed it on, as is, and checked the headspacing. Of course, the original factory script is now underneath in the barrel channel. So, he stamped in the cartridge designation on top where it could be seen. The action I used was originally in 7mm Magnum, then someone installed a Remington 26" take-off barrel in .300 RUM on it. So, I just had the 'smith take off the .300 RUM barrel and put on the .264 barrel. I just recently sold the .300 RUM barrel on the 'Net to a chap up in Whitehorse, Yukon. [I did toy with the idea of doing up another rifle in .300 RUM but thought, what's the point, I already have a .300 Win Mag.]

The project didn't cost me a lot. I got the .264 barrel cheap [$60 CDN], the Rem 700 action in the Classic stock with the .300 RUM barrel on it cost me $550 CDN. I sold the barrel for $75 CDN. The 'smith only charged me $50 to change over the barrels, blast off the old blueing and headspace it. I also bought the scope, used, off the 'Net. It's an excellent condition matte B&L Elite 3000 5-15x50mmAO [Weaver bases with Burris "Z" rings].

It was lots of fun to do. And yes, you're right I gotta get out and shoot it!!!

Regards, Marcus.

A Ruger M77 Mark II .264 WinMag pop up in one of our local shops at the beginning of last year.  Long story surrounding it but suffice it to say, the price was perfect, and after getting some great feed back from Eagleye and another fella on another site, I jumped at the opportunity to own it.  I immediately changed out that black plastic stock with a walnut stock from a Ruger M77 Mark II 7mm RemMag. Topped it all with a Sightron SII 3-12x42mm mil dot.  Wonderful combo.

I'd heard how fellas had been loading up their WinMag with the heavier 140 gr. bullets and hunting the large stuff (elk, moose) very successfully.  While this versatility did impress me, hunting this size of game was never the intended purpose for my .264 WinMag.  I wanted a flat shooting antelope and deer cartridge.  Period.  I designed my loads around the 120 gr. Ballistic Tip and used it exclusively last hunting season.  Three shots taken.  Three animals down with little fuss.  1 antelope buck and 2 Mule deer bucks.  Ranges were from 65 yds. out to 340 yds.  I've got larger cartridges in the safe that have had flawless hunting seasons for me, but none have exceeded what that little .264 WinMag did for me last year.  If it sounds like I'm gushing, good.  I am!!!  It's a great cartridge.

Like EAGLEYE mentioned, its obscurity makes it one of those lesser known wonders of the rifle world.  NH, if you can get yourself into one, I'd encourage you to do so.  Great thing about it is factory stamped .264 WinMag can fade into obscurity all together but as long as the 7mm RemMag is kicking, you'll always have cases to work with.

By the way, you'd have a ball with that 7mm STW, as well.  Hunted the '99 and '00 big game seasons with it.  What a performer.  A personal favorite for sure.  I need to get a sporter STW back into the safe real soon.  Later.  >>  klallen

The best thing with the rifles that i would get, I would have one of the most versatile gun safes out there. Then all I would need would be a good varmint rifle. Hmmmm. That is where the money would go up and availablility go down. I wonder... I definitely wouldnt go Savage. I will never buy one. I am too much of an "elitest" as CB called me.  Do any of you guys know of a well made, non Savage, non Remington, non over 900 dollar varmint rifle? Does it even exist? Maybe i should get a Tikka lefty Whitetail Hunter, get a new 28" barrel for it, and make a .22 caliber wildcat off of the .308 cartridge. Hmmmm think of the possibilities.

I'm curious as to why a .264 can get one excited where a .270 is ho-hum. What is the .264 going to do that a .270 won't? Now don't anyone get excited and think I'm slamming it, I'm not. I'd buy one if the right one came along just to have something different, one of the reasons I chose a 8mag over a .338 win mag.

I just found out something. If i did buy a Savage *shivers*, I can get one in .22-250 and that is a pretty good varmint cartridge right? Then i could get a nice fancy heavy lefty target style stock for it and then i would be all set. I would also have to get a new barrel, because the one on it is a 22 incher and i think that is kind of small for a varmint rifle.

Dear NH- The easiest way to get a lefty in the cal you want[264 Win Mag] is to get a lefty  Ruger 77 in 270/06 or whatever. 7Mag if they have it and make your 264. I recently did one in the S.S. version. Started off as a 270 and opened the bolt up and rebarreled. Fine shooting rig and it accounted for several nice deer and elk last season. This or the Savage lefty will both work fine. Too bad you don`t like the Rem 700s There is one here locally[7 Mag] used- 225.00. I may just buy it because!!! Aloha, Mark[in Or]

NH;

The .264 is one of the Winchester short magnum series of cartridges.  They have a common .532 belted case head and, with the exception of the .458, a 25 degree shoulder angle.  The series is from small to large:  .264, .300, .338, .458 Winchester magnum.  Speer shows the .300 case length at 2.62" & all the others at 2.5".  The 2.62 was to allow enough powder capacity for the new mag to speed along with the Weatherby, be .2" shorter, & of course be priced far lower in both rifle & ammo.  Seems to have worked.

What LHB's have you found in the .338 Winmag?  Preferably with a Mauser type action?

KLallen is sure right on the stw ! Mine is a model 70 with a Leupold VXIII 4.5X14. I have not shot it much this year cause I have other projects but It is fun ! As a lefty have you thought about the Ruger #1 ? I can't find my Ruger catalog but it seems to me unless the but stock has a cheek piece it should be fine.the action should be ambidextrios. The 7mmstw is available in the grey laminate with stainless action, I saw one at sportsmans wherehouse in Salem Oregon. Im not a real fan of Stainless rifles but I,d make an exception here ! This thing was Beautiful and had a fine Factory trigger. If I ever see when when my bank account is flush , I,ll probably make room for it in my safe.   ...tj3006

My dad owns a #1 and its pretty good. I just want to have a lefty rifle collection. I think it would be nice to have all of my main hunting rifles being lefty bolt actions.

My hutin buddie has a oridgional pre 64 .264 win mag.Its a little beat up cosmeticly but sure is a nice rifle. I would love to buy it from him but if I did it may well turn into a custom pre 64, in .338 win. Nothing against your pet cartridge but my stw would fill the role the .264 would play, I have a hankerin to own 2 each of each of the rifles cartiges in my safe. I Doubled up on the 308 already and am jonesing for another 06 now. The other rounds I plan to aquire 2nds of are .338 win mag and the 4570. Mabye the stw but its prety specialized and the ultra long range thing is really not my cup of tea. I might trade my 7mm08 for one of the others, I really don't know what I need the little 7 for but I have a hard time Parting with such a good shooter.   ...tj3006

NH - Check out the Tikka Continental for your varmint rig.  It's got a heavy barrel but a lot less weight than the Savage 112's.

Don't want any feedback from the Savage haters (), but elitist or no, you should shoot one of those Savage 112's before you dismiss them.  I've got one in .223 that's 28 years old and still shoots damn good.

Hey Tex, the only problem that i can see with that rifle, a very big problem, is the fact that the bolt is on the wrong side!!! That would ruin the idea of having all lefty bolt rifles in my safe, that i have to buy this year .
