So I saw this question on another forum. Most there are a bunch of
braggarts or trolls. I do think it is an interesting question though.

If you carry do you:

Only if you carry a mag loaded:

load a single in the pipe - and load a full mag

Insert a magazine - leave the pipe empty

Insert a magazine - rack a round

Insert a magazine - rack a round then drop the mag and top off

The overwhelming thought on the other site was the load +1

Myself I have found the drag of a full mag to be nearly enough to stop
the function of a blow back action. A drop down action like a 1911, Sig,
or Beretta, H&K, etc. Can more easily handle that extra drag from a full
mag.

Secondarily, how often do you use the same round chambering it from
a magazine. Taking into account the bullet setback?

I try to keep track and keep it to ten times before I move it to the
bottom of the mag. I'm not anal or scientific but I do try.

How about you?

When I was in the Army the 20rd AR mag was only 18.

Opinions?

I never load mags full.

I do notice that most auto advertise the mag capacity plus
one in chamber. that means the load/cycle/remove mag/load
one in mag/ reinsert/   stupid.

My new 380 says 7+1. as you know when you shot it, I load
six in the mag; cycle one into chamber. So for me it is
just   a thin 6 shooter!

To me the pressure pushing up on a full magazine on the bottom of a
bolt is a lot of friction to overcome considering each round exerts less
and less and the reliability should be increasingly better with each shot.

Most of my pistols I will load to max with out any problems, the 1911's
may be a little finicky especially the Dan Wessons. DD you
know what I have, but I agree with the AR format.

Glad I stirred things up. Haven't seen The Dad post here in awhile.

I know he has a few Glocks and I may dabble with them from time to
time. A 17 round Glock mag being pushed into a gun with a a closed
bolt is not an easy task. You can rap it good wit the palm of your hand
but it may not seat even though it is swelled and thick enough to hold in
place just by friction. Same problem in a 1911 platform is unlikely.

none of my bolt action rifles are ever loaded to capacity.
In my 416 DGR, I load 1 in and two down...except when in
africa. In Africa folks never use a safety. They only
load one in by cycling the action when game is spotted.
they also treat every gun as if it is in that condition.

On staggered magazine (the mauser invention) high pressure
from a full mag, heavy spring pressure, makes it easy for
the bolt to cycle OVER the top cartridge.

Fella's;

My carry gun is an H&K USPc in .40 S&W. I have both 10 and
12 round magazines for it. In both cases it's full
magazine inserted, rack the slide, drop the hammer, remove
the mag & top it off.

I've carried the gun since the 1990's & never had a problem
with feeding or function using either type of magazine.

I do it slightly different, I load mag with few rounds, insert mag rack to load, remove mag and finish loading. I see no benefit, topping off mag twice, being how last few rounds are hardest to load.

I carry a S&W Shield when I am at work. I insert the
magazine then put a round in the chamber. That only
leaves 6 in the magazine.

I try to remember to rotate the chambered round every 2
weeks or so. I never have measured them but I can't tell
by looking that their has been any bullet set back.

The rest of the time I carry a revolver. It only holds 5
rounds, but I figure 5 is better than none.

I do find it interesting that I have never heard of
anyone carrying a semi-auto with a full magazine and
nothing in the chamber.

OK,

What do you do with "that" round that has felt the slam of the slide
multiple times?

I move it to the bottom of the magazine. Then almost every
time I go to the range, I shoot the ammo thats in the
magazine. If I shoot that gun more I use cheap ammo then
when I get home I reload the magazine with carry ammo.

I've carried a Firestar for decades cocked and locked
with a full mag (7+1) without trouble. It rides in a
thumb break belt holster or horizontal carry shoulder
rig. I change the mags every couple of months to
relieve the springs and will change the one from the
chamber at the same time. If I hit the range, the one
in the chamber gets shot first regardless of how long
it's been in there. 788

Interesting question. For me it all depends on the situation. For my glock I never load the mag full it is just too hard to load and the first shell cycles to hard. Most of the time I carry one in the pipe and one less than full in the mag. With that said I do much better with revolvers than autos so the majority of the time I carry a double action with all 6 chambers ready and have a couple of speed loader to refill if needed.
