my oldest son, joe (15) is a typical teenage kid who usually doesn't have
the common sense to keep his shoes tied, but he did really well this
weekend, and managed to spot and track a decent 3x4 mulie buck
yesterday. the antlers were nothing big, but the thing must have dressed
out at about 225 lbs. my dad also got a young antelope buck. mike (my
13-yr old) and i took the better looking coulee and hiked around about 6
miles, plus little cuts and ravines, and saw not a single thing except a lot
of poop and tracks. there were signs that a bird hunter had been there
either earlier that day or the day before, so perhaps the deer had moved
over to where my dad and joe were. we finally saw one mulie doe running
about a hundred yards in front of the pickup as we were driving back to
the gate, but there was never a very good shot, so i passed and watched
her scramble up the side of the coulee.

i got some great pix of the country i hunt in on saturday, but didn't have
a camera on hand for joe's deer on sunday. we've still got the head, and
i'll get a pic of him with it sometime this week. he shot it at about 175
yards with my .30/30 (150-grn remington factory ammo), and we've got
a full deer with no lost meat, same
as the antelope. still my tag, mike's and my dad's deer tag to fill. i had no
more antelope opportunity, so i missed out on bagging one this year, but
that's alright, i certainly tried hard to get it, and that's good enough.

had another opportunity for a very big, fat muley doe yesterday, which we
saw bedded down in a field while we were looking for my dad's jacket,
which he had taken off while dressing the antelope. unfortunately, the
jacket had blown a half-mile or so into someone else's land, and we saw
the doe while we were looking for it. since my dad had his cell phone, i
tried calling the landowner, but he was out. no one around for miles, and
he probably wouldn't have minded anyway, but i had two kids in the
pickup and an example to set, so i passed on the shot. it sucks even more
because she was less than 50 yards away and just lying there calm and
serene as an angel while we idled past in the pickup. ah, well.....we never
did find the damn jacket, either! lol.....

in any case, back to joe, he really is enthusiastic now that he has a couple
of deer under his belt, and i was impressed with the way he kept up with
dad (who has wooden legs, it seems, and can hike anywhere for any
length of time). he also did well tracking, spotting blood that my dad had
missed.

the hunting stories above were all from yesterday. saturday, billy and i
hiked another good-looking courlee system while dad and mike went to
pretty much the same place where dad and joe went sunday. saturday
was a pretty slim day; billy (my 11-yr old) and i only saw 5 mulies, about
500 yards and running away from something up the side of a coulee. dad
and mike came across another nice buck, but mike had trouble looking
though the scope and the muley made its escape. as it turns out, the eye
relief as well as the focus were pretty far off for him, and he hadn't
mentioned it till then. before at the range, he had always moved his head
around and squinted till it was "good enough," i told him from now on,
he's got to let me know about stuff like that!

anyway, it's pretty bad that we aren't seeing so many deer, because there
have been nearly no hunters except us, and on the opening day of
antelope season (october 8th) we saw at least two separate herds
with at least 2 dozen deer in each herd. the coulee is probably 6 or 7
miles long by 150-200 yards at the bottom and probably 500 yards wide
on top, with a very nice dry creek bed, brush, ravines, cuts and draws
running all through it. there are 3 adjacent coulees that are just as nice,
but not as long, maybe only a couple miles each. on top of that, tehre mis
also strip-farm land extending for a half-mile on top of the whole coulee
system, and grazing land going the other direction. CRP, riverbottom and
some wetlands are also on this land. the terrain is perfect, but i think that
too many hunters on the state school section that is to the south make
them nervous, and they must have gone somewhere.

i figured mike would be first as well. he has had, at least 4 times, deer
standing broadside in front of him less than a hundred yards away. for
various reaosns, he hasn't shot, but i think that now that joe has one, he's
got a rep to protect, so he will shoot.

rob - still hoping for an afternoon hunt in your neck of the woods. we are
either going to be down on the 16th or else the 19th. i'll kep you
informed~~

this mulie seems typical of a lot of mulies in this area. large bodies, small
antlers. i am assuming that it ahs something to do with the soil, because
they sure get plenty to eat, but it might not have the right nutrients for
antler gorowth. this mulie would have eaten mostly grains with a good dose
of alfalfa and some native grasses. sage is present but i believe would have
been a last resort with so much grain nearby.

Nice buck and I see you were watching a little TBS this weekend.

I think there are lots of reasons for smaller antlered deer in this area, but I don't think genetics is one of them.

Here are a few bucks that were taken not far (within 30 miles) from where I assume you were hunting.

craig -

those are sure some nice bucks!

i would agree that genetics probably isn't much of a factor; like you, i
have seen many in the area that were just as big as anything found in the
center of the state, including in a massive buck in the very same couleee
where this one was taken. at the same time, though, i have noticed a big
difference between here and down in lewistown, where they seem to have
wider and more massive racks as a rule. food or soil minerals seemed
like a likely reason, but i am not sure.

one other factor that i was thinking of was age. i am thinking that if this
buck was an older guy, his body might not be producing all of the
testosterone-related goodies for antler gorwth. once again, this is just a
hypothesis, not anything based on science.

judging from a couple of pix sent to me by big sky, i'd say that they get
pretty big up in the northeastern part of montana too!

ron: if you find yours maybe mine is with it ?????

you know its good when the kids get a deer, BUT then they think they are alot smarter than you !!!!

my buddy and i were thinking next year we are going to put the kids in their own camp down the road and let them go on their own !!! we are also thinking about the same thing this summer fishing. going to keep track of what the kids catch and what we get.. this should be good....

KIDS ????? sometimes they think they are better than the teacher. or as the old saying goes , you buy them books and all they do is eat the pages.......

so far (knock on wood) the kids are still eager to learn, and think that dad
and grandpa have a few trix left to teach them.

the day will come however, i imagine!

my dad and i are already getting into "debates" on how to do things. in
general, my ideas prove out the ebst, but specific to the area, his are
definitely better, so we both learn from each other.
