local club has a bolt, stock, service rifle bench rest 1st sat of the month. i got hauled out sat. by sons to hang around and watch, tell stories and critisize. was successfull.

10 or so shooters. springfields mostly with one eddystone enfield and a swede and a krag too maybe others i missed. any us or other unaltered bolt gun. 2 10 shot strings at 100 for agg group. 2 10 shot strings at 100 for score. on reduced sr 600yd target. 20 minutes for sighters. it rained good but not under the canopy where i was.

the '03s beat the 03a3s and the rest too. that little tiny peep up there on the ladder helps i'll bet. don't know the scores but do know the agg that won was 2 inches and a little but under 2 1/4. would like to report tiny groups worthy of internet chatter but hate to lie more than usual.

fun day. good to see those old beaters shoot. son shot a rusky rifle. fair groups but stunk up the score leg. damned thing prints em a foot high at 100 with the sights down all thw way. no sense in hacking up the front site. winner took home a buck from every shooter and had to clean up afterwards. most stayed and helped too but earned bitching rights. by the way winning load was 45 or so of varget and 150 or 155 palma, whichever wieght but one is correct. the man who won also wins most everything else. has beady eyes. no girl friends. just shoots. bought me donuts tho. hell of a guy. forced me into 5 shots from commander. no damage done to target but shot hell out of backstopand did not drop the thing. brave man.

hi to al and tom and rob and others

so far, so good.

Hello Max, sounds like a nice way to spend a spring afternoon. I'm afraid all discharge of firearms has been banned around here untill the wind subsides. There have been reports of bullets landing twenty miles off course and in the opposite direction of fire at the range I shoot at. I always thought organized shooting could be fun but to my knowledge the range I shoot at doesn't do a lot of it. It's not really a club but a public range run by a board of directors on a public land lease.

I'm afraid I haven't been doing much shooting at all. I've been cutting down a lot of trees, first mine then the neighborhood after I brought home a boom.

I'll have to try and pay more attention to what's available for shooting sports locally. I know the Cowboy shooting is growing and looks like fun except I'm not much into costumes and such.

last in line for the nobel peace prize. first in line for pie

Good morning Max.

Interesting hearing that the ladder peep work well.  I started shooting with an '03.  I hated that peep half way down the barrel and the short sighting radius.  Got an '03a3 with a 'proper peep' and my scores went up.  I swapped the bottom machined floorplate and trigger guard from the '03 to the a3 and sold the '03.  sounds like your range experience says I should have kept the '03!

Most of the '03 had 4 groove barrels where a lot of a3s have 2 groove barrels.

Sounds like a great day out, except for the rain.  Are you planning to go the first sat. of June????  Sounds like the group could use some senior guidanceWink.

Sounds to me like Max needs an adapter on that chair to let him shoot too. Let me know how tall to make it and where you want to attach it. ALL projects will STOP until I get it built I know how trying a trip to the range is when you're not shooting.....................Kingpin

Max, glad to hear you got some range time in, even if most of it was watching while eating donuts.

I spent Sat at the range too.  Had a work party to cut grass, repair target stands, etc.  The canned chili and greasy chicken served afterwards hit the spot.

Those '03s sound nice.  I hope your next range trip has sunshine instead of rain.

rob,

no cowboy shooting around here far as i know. get just s little west of here and people wear chaps every day. wouldn't mind making mother dress up tho.......and maybe watch her act like she was riding around the kitchen....

bear, seems like that little peep way up there was much smaller than the one on the a3 reciever . longer radius but bigger hole. i bet it was the man who made the difference.

kingpin. if i showed up strapped to a field piece the wise would run for cover and the meek would wet themselves. the thought of it m,akes me smile tho. great idea for a few laughs. will decline your generous and sure enough offer with thanks.grandma may have som kind of device in mind tho to strap to the chair. i might ask her right after my evening toddy. will advise if able. really am satisfied without the actual shooting. it is alright. alright. rest of you better get after it while you can. better make the time while you have time. it ain't too bad to remember when i did such and such, rather than wish i had done those things.

gunrunner, donuts can save about any day. gin too.

so far, so good.

1/2 - Max  ........

Attitude makes the difference. And when you have a drink with the guys, here's one for you to throw out:

"As good as.... "YOU" are, and as bad as.... "I" am, I'm as good as you are, as bad as I am."

You inspire us all.

Sounds like fun to me !

The guy who shoots alot and has no girl frend sounds alot like me !

I would not mind having an old stock Springfield to shoot ! I have a sporter 03 the action from 1905, and an 03A3 being worked on at the moment. I really like the action, although a draw back is the bolt release can be left in the relase position accidentely while most actions have it springloaded. I could see a guy loosing his bolt with the rifle slung or more likly pulling the bolt out whentrying to work it fast...tj3006

OK, OK, OK, Max. Tomorrow, I am going to the medical department and borrowing a wheel chair. I assume that you are right handed, and if not, I trust that you'll straighten me out. I do believe that I will make the first "vetrans model shooting seat" to be used in a wheel chair. If anyone deserves one, it is you pal. I will also include a buggy whip for you to enlist folks to help you install it when you get to the range............Kingpin

PS: I took your post as a gauntlette thrown down. I accept your challenge Max..............LOL     We'll have you out shooting and winning soon.........

TJ, that bolt stop/release also works as a magazine cut-off if you flip it up.  Seen people do that by mistake.  I alwasy figure andy gun who puts the bolt out by accident because of having the bolt release sticking straight out sideways, is using his rifle in the safest way he can and protecting others.Wink
